Panel Gaps

Chaps, this afternoon i've been preparing a badge panel to fit onto my Martini as i'de removed the original some time back as it was in a poor rusty condition.
Could anyone advise before i weld it up should the panel fit right up flush with the bonnet when closed or is it usual for there to be gap (1cm etc?) between the bonnet and the panel.
