Parking Brake failure

Having owned the car for less than a week and the clutch going imagine my delight when this morning upon pulling up the hand brake the car decided to continue rolling down the hill. The handbrake did seem to pull up a long way and when releasing and driving off a slight clunk could be heard from the rear of the car as if something was releasing.

So, do we think the cable has snapped ( have looked briefly inside the car and pulled the wire and seems to be intact ) or could it be that it has just got incredibly long and loose and will now not engage the parking brake shoes.

Any help would be great as seem to having a mare already!!!!!!
Cheers
Simon

Sure-fire way to tell is to take the rear disk/drum assembly off. The brake shoes in the middle of it occasionally fall out, and can get mangled on the inside of the drum. Either way, the handbrake is never the best in the world.

The good news is that all the parts to totally rebuild it (should it be necessary) are not expensive. I think.

Check the Garage Shop Manual section at www.clarks-garage.com

It has all you need to know to adjust the handbrake
