Parking brake shoe replacement

Hi Guys - Bought some new parking brake shoes at Brands the other week. Finally ran out of adjustment and got tired of parking in gear all the time!

Have read through my copy of Bentleys and although a bit of a faff, doesn't look too difficult..

Any advice regarding previous experiences would be handy.

Is there any way round taking off the brake lines so I don't have to bleed the system afterwards?

Steve

Thanks Ade.... top man!

Pictures as well ...doesn't get much better than that.

Once again guys what a top forum and handy bunch we have in our register.

Cheers

Steve

That is a good thread. About the only thing I can add is that an old wire coathanger is useful to hang the caliper up out of the way. The tip about removing the clip which gives you a little more flex to move the caliper about is a good one, but getting the clip back on can be a pain so its perhaps a 50:50 IMHO.

Hi Steve,
You can carefully bend the caliper brake pipes to get the calipers of the disc, without disconnecting them, the 19mm bolt at the bottom of the caliper can be a pain to get off using a spanner, 1/4 of a turn at a time and they are long bolts.
I used a 3/8" drive ratchet (small head) to undo it part of the way, you can't undo it all the way as the ratchet head hits the trailing arm and you get all jammed up, finish off with a spanner.
Getting the little discs back over the springs and pins that hold the shoes on are a pain, I held the discs at the tip of long nosed pliers and pushed and turned them onto the pins. Remember to align the hole on the disc in the right place so you can get a screwdiver onto the adjusting cog afterwards. also clean up the paddle mechanisms which open the shoes out, the cable goes through the middle of them, these get sticky with brake dust. the coat hanger is something I always used for hanging calipers.
Good luck, how's the neck before you start all this.??

Richard - Thanks for the coat hanger tip a good idea....now I wonder if we have one of those lying around the house somewhere?

Steve - Thanks also for the help and advice it's greatly appreciated. I've had problems refitting those springs before and have ended up with them flying around the garage. Seem to remember reading about a special device that's on the market that makes the whole operation a little less dangerous. I'll try and get hold of one I think.

Regarding the neck issue... I was hoping to convince Sandy (my better half to non R24 members) that squatting, hunched up in the wheel arch of the car, on a cold garage floor this weekend is all part of the specialists carefully constructed rehabilitation plan to assist with the realignment of my troublesome disc.......nope, she didn't fall for it either. Need another cunning plan to sneak past the guards.

You'll know if I've been successful if next time we meet I look like a cross between Victor Meldrew and that bell ringing bloke from Notre Dame!

Never mind the job has to be done.

Thanks again guys for the tips.

Steve.
