parking outside

Guys

I just wondered if I could seek your views on this.

At the moment, I have a daily driver (13 yr old Jag XJ6) and the Porsche stays in the (single) garage, and only comes out in the dry. The 944 is rust free, but not a garage queen.

I've had the daily driver for just over 3 years and the 944 for just over 5 years, but I need to move on now to something else. Was thinking of sellign the daily, getting a proper classic which I would garage and parking the 944 outside, and using as the daily car.

I'm a bit reluctant to do that for fear of the 944 (which has been pretty much pampered) deteriorating while parked outside in all weathers.

Just wondered what your views are on daily use and whether you think I should go for it.

Mines lived outside since I bought it 18 months ago, it looks no different now when I bought it. It is driven daily though.

Dare we ask what colour ?

Based on the white 944 in his avatar, and the username "Alpine", I'm guessing it is....... Cobalt Blue. [;)] [:D]

Our alpine 944 spent most of its time with us outside ~ went into the garage overnight maybe 4 nights a week. Without a genine back-to-back comparison though, it is difficult to draw any conclusions.

My guards red turbo has been outside since bought it nearly a year ago and has also been driven every day since ownership. The paintwork looks as good now as the first day I got it. Frequent washing at least every two weeks and a good dose of carnuba wax after every wash seem to do the trick nicely.

944's can live outside very happily. I dare say that they would be happier still if they lived inside all the time, but mine has been an outside-only car for the last four years, and it's fine.

Put it another way. Other cars may not survive outside quite as well, so if it's a choice of leaving your 944 outside or leaving your (soon to be acquired) classic Morgan / E-type / Alfa / BMW328 (no, not what everyone is thinking about) outside, it may be wise to let the rain fall on the porker.

My first 944, an Alpine white '88 S, lived outside for 6 years. I'm a bit further North than you so Winter's are at least as bad. The car was fine, never really rusted during that time (though it was younger) and always started first time.

My car has lived outside since I got it 18 months ago, it has a cover which not only helps protect from the elements but also pedestrians and passing cars reducing stone chips and unwanted damage. If you wash the car regularly and wax once or twice every couple of months this will help keep it protected from road grime, etc.

A garage probably would be better if you can afford the luxury, if not as Oli says these cars seem to stand being outside relatively well, personnaly I am more concerned with salty roads in winter than keeping my car outside..

All mine have lived outside, never had a issue with any of them, my 82 auto 924 sat on the drive uncovered for over a year during its resto and that was right up in The Cheviots, just wash it regularly and wax it and keep a check on the underneath/ and prone area's and it should be fine, thats all I did with the 924S and it'll be the same for the 944 I have now, and I'm up around near Neil

I agree with Olli. Now that my beloved 944 and beloved Morris Traveller and convertible are all classic cars and probably, in todays market worth about the same money. The 944 will have to live outside (once it is back on the road) and the Minors with their wood / leaky roof need more protection so will be garaged/covered.

Wax is the key to protection though- Carnauba on the paintwork and underbody wax on the underbody.

thanks for that Guys, that does give me some comfort.

I wont say just yet what classic I have in mind, for fear of extreme derision, but if I do take the plunge I shall let you know.

You might find it starts to fill up with water if you have it sitting out in the rain!

Get a Cover craft car cover if it's going to be unused for most of the time.

Mine leaks a bit (trying to locate the source...) but other than that seems fine outside, it was guard's Pink to start with so is showing no deterioration

Well no-one has derided me yet on here for driving Minors as well as a 944!!

My Lux was used daily, left outside and never covered.

Had no problems except the usual having to demist and de-ice in the winter.

My Turbo lived under this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170480792439&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_500wt_1182

Kept it dry inside and out.....even before I replaced the hatch seal and drilled a 1mm hole at the bottom of the rear light clusters enabling them to drain rather than fill the boot!

Just purchased a cover for the Corvette and its carp!! advertised as breathable......its got holes in the top! Its a poor fit, not very soft, too bulky.

Had to use it as I had the builders in.

Will have to save up for a new Goretex cover. I did try my old one but as it was a perfect fit on the 944 it was obvious how much bigger the C5 is.
