Parts from USA

Hey Guys,

Has anyone bought parts from the US. I have to change my Heat exchangers and Porsche cant supply due to no stock and also have no available date. I am now forced to buy B&B headers as they seem the best but am unsure about how the purchase works.

What are the duty and vat tax implications on arrival. I have looked on the HM website but its a bit unclear of exact costs.

How can I confirm the best exchange rate.

On a credit card are they insured.

Thanks in advance if anybody can help.

Paul

From my experience the Duty and VAT situation is very hit and miss. Officially there is no lack of clarity but it seems that it's a matter of luck if your shipment gets nabbed or not. Some carriers seem more prone to being "caught" than others.

I bought some Bilstein shocks from Pelican Parts some time ago and they were shipped via USPS (US Postal Service) and imported through Parcelforce with no request for Duty or VAT. Some suppliers will invoice as a "Gift" to avoid the charges although it's obviously not the proper way to do it. Officially the Duty is, I think, likely to be around 5% and the VAT would be charged at the standard current rate on ALL of the charges, including the carriage cost, at the date of import.

Purchases valued at more than £50 would be covered by the credit card insurance. If you pay on a credit card you have no control over the exchange rate - it will be converted to Sterling by the credit card company when it's billed to you. The only way to have control over the exchange rate would be to purchase the US Dollars through your chosen Forex source and then stuff the notes in an envelope and send to your supplier - but I wouldn't recommend it!!!

Regards

Dave
