Parts Price Increase

Just had the clutch replaced and it feels like a different car. I was warned about a month ago that Porsche had increased their parts prices and some parts had been hiked hugely. Looks like this includes clutches for our beloved RSs - £808.94 + VAT is the new price for the two plates and a release bearing. Thank God I had GT One do the work rather than an OPC, their £50 + Vat per hour made it a less bitter pill but still nearly £1,500 all up inc. VAT for the job.
 
Apparently this is a consequence of what Porsche GB charmingly refers to as harmonisation, the name given to the process by which the prices of parts in the UK are brought in to line with those in the rest of Europe. Some prices going up, but conversely some going down. Anyone found any lower priced items lately?[8|]
 
And can anyone explain how the Porsche Club of Great Britain's CoC with Porsche GB helps us Porsche enthusiasts and brand ambassadors in this instance? [:eek:]
 
No doubt the cost of a replacement ashtray has come down in price for 996s and 997s as you're not allowed to smoke in company cars any more.
 
Im kicking myself over this; the RS door closer handles which I didnt buy at 48 quid each + vat a couple of months ago (was being tight) are now 214 + vat each! Rob Hounslow gave me a tip that 993 RS handles were similar but under 50 quid each, and guess what... 214 now aswell!
 
Just had the clutch, master & slave cylinders replaced too, and just like yours Stewart, it really does feel like a different car. Having also recently done discs and pads all round too, I can confirm the price hike applies to these too![:mad:] Car feels great now, but I don't think I can afford to drive it anywhere![:(]

Who in the club is responsible for our ongoing relationship with the Porsche company? These reported price increases of over 400% in a matter of months seem to me to be a perfect example of where the CoC could have some true benefit to club members by helping to reduce prices to sensible levels through negotiation.

Anyone know who we should all be emailing to voice our concerns?

being a cheeky ba$*#rd with the dealer and telling him you want discount gets me more than being a PCGB member anyway; I used to get 15% discount on parts from my OPC before I was a member, and since they didn't add the 10% PCGB discount and give me 25% off when I flashed my card, I haven't bothered taking it out of my wallet since.. [;)]

Personally i would not source the clutch from any opc in the first place. AP racing or sachs would be my first ports of call. My red RS definately had an AP driven plate but cant remember now what the pressure plate was.What effect has the new clutch had btw. Easier gear changes? less notchy? not slipping? faster?

Do you know the original manufacturer of RS brake discs and pads Laurence?
 
not off hand, the claipers are almost certainly brembo (but you knew that already i'm sure) the cup cars used pagid pads (as Melv will tell you) the discs at a stab in the dark were possibly ATE. I have used Porsche discs to replace mine in the past but i'm bu**ered if i can remember who the maker was. Does'nt help that they were in Porsche boxes too. I obtained them via a specialist rather than the opc, so price was lower too:)
If your having work done by a specialist many of them shop around too so they can be competative. I'd be suprised if they are buying direct from the opc without a substantial discount?
 
I was thinking Ate, or maybe Zimmermann or Textar. The only reason I asked was the guys at GT One recommended replacing them when they need it with original equipment, but if the OPC prices are very high I'll look elsewhere (I'll be doing them myself not by a specialist).

Always makes me smile when Porsche - and BMW are just as bad - mark up a Bosch bulb or windscreen wiper blade by 200 or 300% because it's in a pretty box.

If you want OE parts and you're not able to get good discount from your local OPC, then I might be able to help. The OPC I deal with has gave me 20% on rotors and the same on calipers (this was over the summer).

Otherwise try Kontakt on 020 874 0911, they can often source OE stuff at much cheaper prices.

possibly my question got lost in all the others but to the chaps who have had the clutch replaced what did you notice most after the change???
 
It didn't get lost Laurence, I just haven't been around for the last few days. The effects are a lighter pedal feel, less notchy changes, no problems getting it into first when it is hot and the creak (which I thought was the slave cylinder) has vanished. As it wasn't slipping, the only effect on speed has been a reduction in the time taken to change gear.
 
great thanks for answering. I wondered if a new clutch made for a less notchy feel to changes. I assume the change was because of those problems you list.

Only just caught up with this post again, and yes new clutch really smooth (less notchy) so gear change quicker and whole car just feels more responsive (although the new clutch does smell like a full baby's nappy!). I don't think it was slipping before, but the pedal movement was awful. Looking forward to taking her out to the Ring in ten days or so.[:)]
