First a bit of an update on the PAS cooler line. It is off, and I am getting a new one made by powersteering.co.uk, as suggested. The chap is very helpful, and usefully cheaper than the other source I'd found.
Right now I have three problems:
1. I cannot get the banjo bolt holding that end of the return pipe onto the steering rack loose. It is very difficult to get to - on top of the rack and under the engine. It takes an allen key - and appears to be quite shallow. Although I can get an allen key and may hands in there, just about, I do not have the purchase to loosen it. Already the hex shaped hole is beginning to round. Has anyone any tricks, or trick tools, to achieve this? I've instead removed the main wiggly pipe section of the return line form the ~4" of flexible hose joining the 2 metal sections. I can attach the new one at this point, but I am concerned about the (27 year) old flexible hose weeping afterwards, and I will be getting the new complete length from the rack to the reservoir.
2. I was going to replace the rubber pipe going from the reservoir to the PAS pump. Then I discovered it is attached to the engine by two inaccessible bolts, nestled behind the radiator fans. Has anybody removed this without removing loads of extra components? In which case how, and did you manage to reattach adequately? I can barely get my hands in and fear even if I got them off I would never be able to tighten up the new pipe.
3. What is the PAS oil reservoir made of? It almost seems to be porous. Is this a function of the age? After cleaning the outside with paraffin it is still quite oily.
