Passanger Electric window failure

Hi
Having replaced all the electric window switches over the last year or so I continue to be beset by switches occasionally staying in the "on" position. The result of this is the window initially fails to operate when I notice and reset the switch. If you leave it a few minutes it will start working again (I believe that there is a thermal cut out on the motor which needs to cool before the system will work again)

Today the problem has happened again but this time the problem seems permanent. The driver side window continues to operate and the relevant fuse appears good, I don't know about the relay.

Does any one have any ideas?

First thing is to make sure the switch itself is OK. Pop out the one that you know is working and swap it with the one that isn't.

The switches tend to fail because the rocker pins break off and then the part that you push lodges, usually, in the 'on' position. It's quite a straight forward fix if that's the problem - remove the switch and disassemble (I seem to recall there being 4 clips on the surround that just need to be prised away). Then with a fine drill, drill a hole through where the rocker pins stick out. Slide in a panel pin or nail (cut of the sharp end and head of the nail) of a diameter similar to the rocker pins, into the drilled hole, so that it protrudes both sides just enough to rest in the switch surround. Reassemble the switch.

May pay (if it is the switch) to buy a new one, these are as cheap as chips from eurocarparts! £14.40 and I've had them for less than a tenner when they have had their sales on!

When the passenger window switch on the drivers side failed in my car last year I replaced it with an OEM switch, out of curiosity I took the failed switch apart but could find no obvious issues. I cleaned everything up, re-greased it and put it back together and it works fine now. One of these days I might swap them over as the new one looks different as it's not "polished" through 18 years of use like the other two [:D] .

The cheaper pattern switch did not look as well made as the Porsche one, whereas the OEM looked identical as you'ld expect. How do they look and feel in the flesh Mike?

He probably has the Europart ones fitted last year, you need to pay the £26 and get the Porsche ones.

Porsche retail now £39.91 inc

You cant actually tell the difference, perfect fit and colour match and the feel is the same. A competitive price does not always constitute poor quality, the proof is in the pudding!

There are 3 options on switches, Uro aftermarket, OEM & Porsche. In my experience they are all as good (read as bad) as each other with a failure rate pretty much equal to each other!
