Paul Smith and LIL is famous

RC18B 911 turbo

New member
Have any of you seen this months 911 and Porsche world it features Paul's 944 Turbo (pre vandalism on track[;)] hope it's fixed soon if not already) they've got some really good pics of it and a nice write up on it too. Well done.

Thanks Jon [:)]

It was a good article and the journalist was obviously very very excited when he drove the car, you can see this translate in to the prose he uses in print. He does make me sound like some sort of power junkie [8D] but of course we all know that's not true [;)] and I woudn't dream of correcting his figures of 350bhp and 450lbft, when in fact it was running at 393bhp and 480lbft when he drove it. He also makes it sound like I did everthing myself when in fact it was Jon M and SimonP, all I did as hassle them every week on the phone [:D]

I'm really glad the article has just come out because I have obviously been very unenthusiastic about everything Porsche these last few weeks and even ad talks with someone to sell my engine and abandon owning a Turbo altogether. Reading it today has refired my interest and after another chat with Jon M this morning I've now given the go-ahead for LIL to be repaired. It's a purely emotional (and not excatly fiscal) decision, but after reading the magazine and looking at the pictures again I just want to get her back and finish the final development that we were just about to take.

Now does anyone have a brand new genuine N/S front wing and rear quarter panel going cheap to keep the costs down [:D]

I haven't even seen the article yet........

you after my Media Whore crown [;)][:D][:D].. good read, you got to get that car fixed . [8D]

Might be worth trying an overseas opc for the parts - I know some parts are a lot cheaper that way,

"I wouldn't dream of correcting his figures of 350bhp and 450lbft, when in fact it was running at 393bhp and 480lbft when he drove it."

I was annoyed about that because the car would have come out above the 996 turbo in his little power to weight comparison ...oh yes and he seemed to forget about the torque difference when he was on that point too! I did like the way John avoided mentioning to him the no. of standard parts on your car still which are still chocking the potential of that engine, from the article he made it sound like its only speculation that the engine could run over 350hp.. ha ha ha

It is exactly that level of consistent inaccuracy that made me cancel my subscription.

If they lash up the details on something we know about how can we trust what they are saying on something we don't.

None the less massive up for Mr Smith (and well deserved). I must get a copy for you to autograph [:)]

I am delighted to hear that it tipped the balance in bringing LIL back to life. I bet you have been a grumpy so'n'so for the last couple of weeks.

No - to be fair they were the original figures I gave them. The 393/480 was recorded about a week before the publishing deadline. I thought they wrote a very positive article and Richard the journalist was genuinely very very impressed when he drove the car (he has a 944 Lux himself so is definately one of us [:)])

Absolutely bl00dy unbearably grumpy []

I'm okay now though [:)] but ask me again when I get the bill []

It is a pretty spectacular way to get Mrs Smith to release the money to get your rusty cills done LOL.

I know [:)]

I think she may suspect something when I smack the offside into the next available hard surface []

That could be slightly more of a challenge on a track day as most bends go right . Priory or Brooklands are perhaps your best bet. Maybe Brooklands by preference as you would be going slower by the time you got to the tyre wall but it would take a fair level of skill to ensure you got over the gravel trap.

Bedford could be your friend. That's a Left Hand Track.
