PCGB Cadwell

Just returned from a week away and was delighted to open an e-mail from Steve Kevlin relating to a recent addition to this year's calendar: Cadwell Park, full circuit, open pit-lane sometime in October. Bearing in mind that Steve can see no prospect for Croft or Donington this represents a great opportunity for the northern contingent. I am sure that Steve is very keen to see a good level of support for this event which experienced dwindling support when run previously.

Who else is likely to attend? I have continued to 'do' Cadwell since the club withdrew it from it's calendar and can highly recommend it. It is very technical but not as intimidating as people expect. Also, I know a great route in from my place so a fun but sensible convoy from J2 M180 would start the day off perfectly with no queueing on the M1 or M62.

Well, who's up for it?

Ian

Probably Ian,
It's the other side of the country these days but it's probably too good to miss!

Tony

Crikey! whats your idea of intimidating then? [&:] Its a great circuit, and well worth the effort, and I may make it in october, but I'll have my sensible head that day. Seen to many dead cars, following little mistakes! I can only think of one corner with run off (Park), although MSV have been busy resurfacing again this winter, and I believe provided more than 3 foot of run off on the exit of barn.

:)

Before I drove Cadwell, somebody described it to me like a Lincolnshire country lane....

I eventually drove Cadwell some years ago in a 964C4 -not realising we were not doing the Mountain cct I walked the track the evening before (40mins in case u were interested!!) and when I got back to the paddock asked if any of the marshall's would like to trade my car for a Mini...............

At the end of the track day, possibly the same person said, "If you like this you'll like Oulton Park", They were not wrong!!

Sorry guys, I've been a little negative. I do love Cadwell park, its probably in my top 3 circuits in the UK, however, I'm used to driving it in something mini sized (as Melv says!), and whilst its a stunning drive, you always feel that you are on the edge of big accident, which I how I guess it should be! Oh and I'm sure it will be bone dry in October, so thats good! [;)]

They dont call it the mini ring for nothing! I do think the comparison with Oulton is a good one, Cadwell is kind of like Oulton, but a little smaller, slower, and less run-off. But then I think Outlon is probably the best circuit in the UK. Now lets talk about Castle Combe - that is in my bottom 3 circuits in the UK [:D]!!!

Noooooo!! Combe's a hoot, even with the chicanes

Go on Hugh............did you have that Quarry moment????[:D]

Hugh

Its a personal thing but I generally feel more worried at Oulton than I ever have at Cadwell. I don't like talking about crashing but if you did have an off at Caddy it would generally be at a much slower speed than Oulton.

So,are you coming, then?

ROMCLAPIMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice work Ian![:D][:D][:D]

Hmmm, Cadwell and Coombe mentioned in the same discussion... 2 of the 3 circuits of the World that I've failed to keep sticky side down in a race car on... (other being Estoril for what's it worth...).

Think both have changed a bit though since I slid a Caterham down the top of the barriers on it's roof past the house that was on the left just before Barn and flipped a Renault 5 turbo on the run to Old Paddock at CC (well pre chicanes!)

That said, both fab circuits though and not unduly dangerous IMHO...

Walter R. says: "If you can see the tree you hit, it was understeer. If you can only hear it, it was oversteer."

Hacki, no experience on English circuits, but two "offs" on the Nordschleife. Does that count?

Not Quarry, Hammerdown! Its barely a corner. The barrier is so close, I didnt stand to chance (once I'd run of talent that is). Great circuit to drive, and not dangerous, just very high chance that if you make a mistake you'll get a damaged car.

Completely agree that an accident at Outlon will be at higher speed.

Oh and I "might" come along actually, its very close to my parents, so get a free accom, and a good meal! Will just have to ensure my head drives underneath my talent (which it doesnt always!) [:D]

Just how exactly did you get a car on the barriers before Barn!!![:D]. Thats perhaps the slowest part of the circuit. I'm guessing there was a bit of contact with another car first! I've seen someone put the car into the inside barrier on the warm up lap there, but this sounds far more exciting. Please tell the story! [;)]

The only way you'll hit the barriers at Barn on a trackday,i.e. no contact is is to deliberately aim at 'em! I'm trying to drum up some support for this event and all this talk of crashing is not helping.

My concern at Cadwell is finding a flow, particularly on the slower sections. I have never driven on a track where you have to concerntrate so much or be so precise and this can be very rewarding.

The other thing to remember is that the drive to Cadwell can be almost as much fun as the track itself, especially if you pick the right route, and the countryside in this area is great.

Quite an impressive flight at Coombe from what I saw from the melee following you[:D]

They altered the circuit at Cadwell just before our last visit, so I hold the lap record there for.................VW Polo G40s[&:]

Barriers used to be right against the track coming out of right hander before Barn... was a qualifying lap, power on hard, "dab of oppo", back left wheel touched the tyre wall which fired the front left into the wall which I promptly drove up and ski'd along the top on the roll cage... "lowspeed" is correct... given fuel was pouring into the crash helmet "low fear" it wasnt'!

Paul! Forgotten you were in the pack behind me at Coombe... there are still those who reckon I flew clean over Mr Bennetts Rover... onboard of me desperately winding on lock despite fact wheels are facing upwards is quite comical.
