PCGB National Soap Box championship 18-19th August

At the clubs national event at the Château Impney on the weekend of the 18th- 19th August, I have volunteered the 997 register to run the soap box derby.
I fully accept that when I say register, that could just be me []
Bearing in mind the fact that we very much seem to enjoy driving and moving events this option was much more in keeping with the register than if we were to do a static car display at the show. I would hope that we could have a small display near to the start/finish to stake our flag!

It would be great if we could show the club how a team of people can make this a great event over the weekend.
I encourage anyone who may have had experience of this type of event to contact me, to see how we can lift this up a level [:)] and for those that would be willing to freely assist to get in touch with me...

The details
Soap Box Derby
As part of this year's national event we are running a soap box derby - but fear not! with the time constraints were going to be using the clubs adult pedal karts for everyone to enjoy.
This year's event location at the Chateau Impney offers us a fantastic area to use, a dual lane tarmac area which is actually one of the roads from the venue with plenty of twists and turns following it's decent from the hotel grounds. It will allow us to run the kart competitors side by side for some proper pedal kart racing!
The entire route is fenced either side, so allows plenty of places to view, cheer and jeer as the teams and participants make their way to the finish line.
Saturday is the members day and we're planning on a inter-region and register competition of timed runs side by side with each other to add to the drama. It's hoped that most regions and register will be able put a team of 3 together as were looking at a relay style race- two drivers and a pusher.
If there is the interest then we'll run it as a league but if not then it's your chance to settle a grudge, perhaps kettles versus beards... all in the best fun obviously.
If you could contact your RO or RS in the first instance to show your team interest or club office for independent competitors. The prize should reflect the event and with that we are hoping to have a driving style prize, so not only will you have the glory to gloat about on Saturday evening but a prize too!
Sunday we'll be running a morning and afternoon session for single team drivers and again a prize for the top karter . The event will again be run with drivers side by side on the starting line for that competitive feel.
This is all free of charge to enter and just part of the events happening at the Château on the 18th and 19th August.

There may not be time for regions/registers to build anything this year?? so may be the fastest/quickest in the clubs pedal cars..
The area being suggested is not on a steep incline, so would have ot be pedal powered either way...

I'd like to thank those that have already offered to assist me/us in running the event [:)]
Some great ideas and once the board come back to me with more details I'll update the post..
General consensus is Yes, this rather than polishing [:D]

Following my meeting at the National venue on Sunday the board showed me the area that they are proposing the Soap boxes will run down.
I think the area has some great potential and whilst its open - and could be fast, we can put straw bales to create some slowing points.
With the banners and flags set up on the fencing it could be a mini Goodwood [;)] however the bends in the road including the right hander just off the start will be named after Lemans curves.

This image is taken looking up towards the start which is way up behind the tree in the background.

This image shows the end of the area we have to use after quite a long straight, so plenty of area to stop safely within, hopefully on the grassy area we will have the 997 team area- we will be the only register to have a dedicated area to meet etc- apart from the Anniversary celebrating registers.

and the route can be seen on google maps quite nicely.. This will be the start line [:)] http://goo.gl/maps/hFr8

I am still looking for members to confirm that they can assist me in running this and those that are prepared to help wil be rewarded by beers (paid for by me) and a free weekend ticket to the event.
Importantly
We also need to get a team together to compete in the challenge- obviously if we get enough people offering to assist then it will be 997 register members with the stopwatches [;)]

I still have the door open for any members who want to represent the 997 register to compete for the Soap box championship [:)]
Also willing volunteers to assist in the running of the track..
The more merrier and the less we have to each do...

Well the teams are slowly putting their cards in the frame now- although I'm awaiting enough of us to represent the 997 register [&:]
However I do accept that we're maybe more...'mature' than some of the other registers [;)]

I have gratefully received offers of help over the weekend and some lovely cars to display by the finish line, but as said- the more the merrier.

I'd like to apologise for my absence from the Soap Box challenge.
I was taken ill on Friday and unable to make it to the setup day or sadly any of the weekend at all.

I had spent quite a bit of time organising with the board and my wife for the part of the event and do sincerely apologise if anyone felt they were let down on the experience and expectations.
I wish to state, that the club covered my absence amazingly with the able help of amongst others Kish, SteveJC, Paul Seagraves wife alongside of my own wife the event still went ahead.
Any shortfall of expectations were down to myself and not the club, and for that I do apologise.

On the upside there were lots of great comments and interest shown toward reviving the soapbox challenge in it's true form at the future club events.

I'm back on my feet, but still feel like I've had a kicking!! [:(]
A few relaxing days to come and hopefully I'll be fighting fit once again.

One of the weeks where the body realises it can't keep up with the mind and soul..[] [;)]
The best thing I can say about the NHS was that they make quite a reasonable cup of tea!- and the custard hasn't changed from when I was a child!!!

Glad you're feeling a bit better Gary, had us worried there. Told you working was an overrated pastime.
