PCM 2.0 software update

Gentlemen,

I just got the Europe 2008 navigation CD's for my 2003 Boxster S with PCM 2.0. I was pretty sure the CD's would update the PCM system software as well, and indeed the display said "Updating system software" or something like that when I inserted a CD. It took like ten minutes to complete.

But when I press the "Main + Trip" buttons, it still says the software version is 2.0.

Is there any other way to upgrade the system software? Current version is supposed to be 3.0, and frankly I didn't think the new maps would work on the old software at all. But navigation certainly works in my car. Maybe it just reports the wrong version?

One of the reasons I wanted the new software is to be able to get the TMC traffic broadcasts. It did work in my car when I was in Germany and Denmark, but not here in Norway. Still don't...

Asked the local PC, they didn't have a clue.

Thanks for any input!

Welcome!

You need the software update CD part number 000.043.205.46. If you have any trouble obtaining a copy, drop me an email [;)] [;)],

Thanks Richard, that did the trick! [:)]

Didn't see any TMC information so far though. It might not work with the PCM in my country. Works like a charm in my Audi...

TMC availability is determined not by the PCM version software but by the coding on the MAP. Germany and parts of France have TMC as a free service, other countries require a subscription from the navigation suppliers. Porsche only subscribed to TMC for the pcm 2.1 in the uk since 2005 , thats why the earlier navigation DVD's do not have TMC for the UK. For other navigation systems such as the renault carminat and VW travelpilot you can get navigation discs with or without TMC , the TMC discs obviously cost more as the price is passed on to the end user. Porsche only offer one variety of map DVD/ CD so you are stuck with what they were prepered to pay for. Its probably a similar case with the earlier PCM 2.0 found in the 986 and 996.

Berty is indeed correct here and my PCM 2.1 most definitely does have TMC and our PCM 2.0 does not :(

Yes, I know Berty is correct.

The strange thing is that my PCM 2.0 with the ancient 2002 maps and 2.0 software actually did receive TMC in Germany and Denmark when I bought the car back in 2006.
TMC just startet in Norway recently, two different services. One is a payed service locked to the software license, and one is an open, public service offered by the national broadcasting service (our BBC). I don't get anything in the Porsche, but get the public one in my Audi with Audi Navigation Plus (RNS-E).

There might be technical differences like protocol support or something like that which stops me from getting it in PCM 2.0, but I can't see it is a license issue. Just guessing. :)

The problem is that since this is a new service unless the PCM knows what frequency to use to recieve the messages it will not pick up the information. TMC works by recieving a message via the radio frequency and then overlaying the information onto the map. Its a similar technology to RDS which allows the name of the radio station or radio DJ to be displayed on some audio equipment.
