hi, can anyone give me advice on my 997 turbo gen 1 2007 PCM 2.1 radio head unit, which has decided not to operate. It randomly comes on, on starting the engine, either working fully, with the screen having all the info but no sound, or nothing, no screen no sound!
Is this a common problem with this unit and what are my options?
thanks for any info.

Hey..
I have no experience personally but a small google and came across this...
"Simultaneously pressing the 1,4,8 numerical keypads on the PCM headunit will initiate a reboot of the system" (found this on two sites)
on same thread... also found this...
"pulling the #9, #10, #11, and #12 fuses from the passenger side panel, cycled the locks, and waited 10 minutes" (i don't know what these fuses do so be careful. I would find out first, before trying this option)

Other than this maybe a firmware update from Porsche will do the trick or completely break it.

I would defo try the reboot option.

Some other problems... could be the AMP is gone from looking through threads or it could be the battery is on the way out.

Let us know if the reboot works.

Cheers!

Try the 1,4,8 reboot first. If no sound probably amplifier fault especially if Bose version.
These units are ludicrously expensive from Porsche so an upgrade to something more up to date from Alpine, Pioneer or Kenwood may be best option.

Hi Ray,
thanks for the info, the radio hadn't been on at all until this morning when it came back all on by itself, so I pressed the 148, everything went off and came back on, but this evening, nothing, no graphics or sound.
The battery was replaced 2 years ago in Feb, so it looks like a professional way forward as I don't trust myself pulling fuses, especially as it's my daily drive!
I'll let you know the outcome.

Sorry to hear that!
Hopefully it can be easily sorted.
Keep us posted on the outcome for sure.

Hi, just a quick update on the radio front. After trying the 148 option, nothing improved so have been looking at replacement units, Pioneer SPH DA120, Pioneer AVIC F88DAB, Dynavin N6 PS S, Alpine ILX 700 and second hand PCM2.1 units on eBay.
Does anyone have any personal experience of any of these units, good or bad?
please let me know any thoughts, thanks

Hi jsk,

Do you have the multi function steering wheel option? If so do you want to retain that functionality? Navtec do an interface module called the MOST-H.U.R. 997 that will support the steering wheel multi function controls. But they advise to install a Kenwood head unit for best compatibility with there module. Pioneer is another option, I think.
An up to date Kenwood unit with dab radio is the Kenwood DNX8160DABS. Navtech are based in USA. Do a bit of a Google on the module and search other forums for more information.

I purchase the module two years ago, and a cheaper head unit from likes of Dynavin with the intention to try it out. But it's still sitting on my garage shelf as I haven't got round to fitting it to try it out. But now recently the Kenwood head unit is what I was considering to buy and then go for the install to try it out.......I just need some time to actually make a start on the project!

You could also try speaking to a few professional car audio installation shops here in UK to see what their experiences are and what they recommend (I haven't done that step yet either).

Please keep us updated on this thread how and what you decide.

A friend of mine went the Kenwood route and is very pleased, particularly with the built in Garmin Nav. Adaptor lead sets and fascia all worked and matched well. He already had updated Alpine amps etc.

Hi Geoff,

That sounds interesting .....any photos of the installation, where did he get it installed? etc

I think the main consideration is Do you have Multi Function steering wheel controls, and do you have the BOSE sound system and want to retain both. Your friend already installed the separate amps (maybe he did not have the BOSE system) With the BOSE there is also the fibre optic (CANBUS) system to think about and that is why you need the Navtec module. https://navtv.com/products/NTV-KIT210/most-hur-997.html

Some discussion on keeping the BOSE or changing to separate Amps: https://rennlist.com/forums/audio-and-video-forum/836203-most-hur-997-or-scrap-bose.html

And this regarding a cheaper option to the Navtec unit: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/953917-install-aftermarket-head-unit-in-most-car-without-removing-factory-amp.html

Cheaper unit here: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/RCA-audio-adapter-kit-fit-Benz-Porsche-fiber-optic-power-amplifier-to-aftermarket-Car-DVD-GPS/607693_32708723316.html?aff_platform=aaf&cpt=1498558975599&sk=VnYZvQVf&aff_trace_key=f93f36dbb737442caf30cbbcff4cfacd-1498558975599-07791-VnYZvQVf

and wiring harness to match so making it a plug and play (reversable) operation in the car: https://cai-store.com/collections/all-products/products/porsche-radio-cd-player-installation-hardware-kit-98-05-911-boxster?variant=3737574725

No multifunction wheel or Bose. So maybe more straightforward than yours? I believe installation by a local audio shop in Dorset so nothing too technical required.
Good luck with whichever you choose but the navtv looks promising to me provided existing Bose amp is OK.
