PCM 2.1 SatNav map updates

Hi, Ive just bought a 09 plate 987 with a Satnav that requires an update (no idea of software version!!). From what I have heard, you need to take it to a Porsche Centre to upgrade the maps, and they will need your car all day!! Think they charge about £150?? Good luck :)

Can someone give me some advice on upgrading my satnav maps.

I have a porsche Boxster 3.2S with a PCM 2.1 running software version 3.3

Can I simply buy an update map 08.2013 and install it or do I need to upgrade the PCM software first?

Any help wold be much appreciated

You can't get full postcode searches with PCM2.1 - only partial postcodes. Take a look here: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/fb.asp?m=681682 I have the update CDs if you need them.

Buy a TomTom. It will be more up to date and at the moment updates are free for life, unlike Porsche where 'updates' are out of date for a couple to hundred quid!

Cheers,

Had my Sat nav upgraded late last year (2009 987S Gen 2), gave me full Postcode capability and updated Maps. Had to take it to the OPC for the upgrade and yes this was £150.00 but was told it was a limited time offer (no idea if that is true or how long it is on for). I've just completed a 2300 mile tour of Europe using it and it was excellent. If it can be upgraded it is worth it.

Think twice about a Tom Tom - I've just "upgraded" from an ancient Navman F20 Europe to a Tom Tom Go 6000. OK, map updates are free, but a full update takes about 3 hours on an 8meg BB line, and within a month of purchase the internal memory is full - so I installed a 32Gig Micro SDHC Class 10 card which the machine saw and formatted (and stole 3Gig in the process!) - but I still haven't figured how the machine will use the additional storage, and have had to move loads of East European camera sites to online storage to make room for map updates.! The online "route planner" is absolute pants, cannot add waypoints, have to do that on the machine itself - ie on a 6" screen with finger prods instead of 21" monitor with mouse. I'm planning a 15-21 day trip to Northern Spain and France, have had to use AA Route Planner online then transfer (manually!) the routes to the TomTom - painful! Plenty of comment about particularly the route planner on the TT forum - but nothing happens. Plus, when first turned on, it takes quite a while to fire up, then comes on at a stupidly small scale so careful prods are needed to get it to a useable scale map.

On the good side, the large screen is excellent, I get little or no problem with scuttle shake (Brodit vent mount) whereas the Navman was unreadable while driving (in the 968 cab, I have built in satnav in the shopping trolley).
