PCM 2.1 UPDATE

Apologies for raising an old thread , but there was some talk about a group buy for the latest map DVD for the PCM2.1 some time back. As far as I am aware the latest map DVD release is 07.2007 though the actual map is 05.2007. As we are now nearing the end of 2008 , does any one know if there is a 2008 or even a planned 2009 map available ? My latest 2008 PET catalogue suggests that the 2007 map DVD I currently have is the most up to date. Is there any way of getting a definitive answer from Porsche about future updates, I have tried navteq (the authors of the software) and they redirect me to Porsche.

I think direct contact with a friendly OPC parts team is the only definative answer to this.
The offer is still in the section of the 997 members only.

My only concern is one that has gone before us all, that of whether Porsche will continue to update the maps now they have the newer updated system in the Gen2.
If previous versions are anything to go on, then its possibly a No []

Interesting to see also when Porsche update PCM3, especially now that it is HD based. They could do it in minutes. They need to do it soon!

When porsche released the most recent update they changed the sequence on the part numbers and started to comment in the tech bulletin suggesting that the update CDs supplied with the map would be required for a map update of 2008 or later. I am hoping that the PCM2.1 and 3 are both using a DVD based map that is interchangeable. Certainly with PCM being specced almost as the norm for a 911 and a desirable option on all other models , there is a very large customer base out there. Lets hope that Porsche honour that customer base and continue to provide updates, otherwise its not something I will be paying for in any future car. A map is only as good as the information on it. Navteq do all the hard work , all porsche have to do is commission a copy.

I heard that in a bid to manage costs Porsche batch burn disks - until they have sold those they do not update the maps! Obviously that excuse won't wash with PCM3.
It could be that Porsche dropped support for PCM1 as the customer base was relatively small that they did not see sufficient value in it - such a disappointing argument hopefully doesn't apply with PCM2 given the wider take-up. Maybe supplying maps needs EU regulation that requires a sat nav distributor to provide on-going up-to-date data.

If Porsche ag find it too costly to support their customers, then why do they legally prevent Navteq from providing an update service, which they would be more than happy to do?[] Surely a win win for Porsche and it's customers. Porsche prevent a lot of bad feeling over it's SAT Nav product and we the customer get regular cost effective updates at reasonable prices.

Agree. The navigation discs are stamped with navteq and harman becker so they are not made in house by porsche but commissioned by them.
