PCM dvd-drive models

Hi all,

Ive been terrible and haven't posted up pics yet, I know!

Just had a question regarding the DVD drives for the PCM2. My car has the screen, but no nav module so was looking around on ebay for the dvd drive. I've come across two, but they have slightly different part numbers.

Does anyone know the difference and which will work on a 2005 car?
997.642.159.01

or

997.642.157.01

There are many part numbers for the dvd drives and seem to be model related. The two numbers you have listed are for 997Turbo. The 157 00 seems to be for horizontal mounting in front of battery and the 159 00 for vertical mounting lower down in the front compartment, maybe for cab model? Whether they are all interchangable is anyones guess. Remember you will need any associated bracketry and MOST bus interconnecting cables as well.
Good luck!

The issue comes down to the version of software in your PCM as much as anything else. The later DVD drives can be matched to earlier PCM 's if the PCM is at the correct software level. If you press MAIN and TRIP buttons together a menu is displayed. On the top is a header bat with hte software version, with a list of installed components on the right of the screen below. Selecting each component reveals its software version. Post these up and I can advise which DVD drive version is currently compatable and which version you can use after update.

Out of the units you are interested in the 997.642.157.01 is the hardware unit that may work.

As Berty states the PCM software must also be correct for this to work. Not only is the software version of the PCM important but also the version of software loaded in the DVD drive. Both of these must be correct. The version of the PCM can be checked as above, the DVD unit will have to be connected to the car to find this out.

Depending on the base software of the PCM will depend on if this can be updated to accept the DVD unit. The upgrade is quite a simple but does require a set of update discs. Several routes for this an OPC or someone who has these discs. Both Berty and I have a set of these and are in the London area.

997s based on the 2wd chassis have a horizontally mounted DVD drive, those based on a 4wd chassis ( including GT3s) have a vertically mounted DVD drive. They must be mounted in the correct plane to work properly.I looked at moving the DVD drive in our RS so our Porsche luggage would fit (the vertically mounted DVD drive gets in the way! Our previous 997 did not have satnav.) I would have needed to buy a replacement DVD drive to mount horizontally out of the way. this is what I was told when I asked at my local OPC; so must be true!

Hi guys, I just took photos of the software versions. Please see below.

997 642 159 01 is a DVD navigation drive applicable for a 997 Turbo in RHD spec vertical mount.

997 642 157 01 is a DVD navigation drive applicable for the 997 Turbo in LHD spec horizontal mount.

Of the two units the 157 is a better match , though its not the correct unit for your car. Since the DVD drive relies on both information from the satellite and pulses from the road wheels , it may be the turbo which uses different brakes has a different pulse signal , hence a different part number. Fitting this unit in your car may result in an error or offset in true location versus actual , that may lead to difficulties when driving in complex road networks or cities.

To get either DVD drive to work in your car, the PCM needs to be updated to level B software , which is version 3.0. Your PCM will require two software updates , the first to take it to level A the second to level B. After the update , the Navigation drive itself will probably require an update to allow use of the newer map DVD's. Don't forget that you will probably require a metal cradle, GPS reciever , cables and some fittings to install the missing parts in your car. These can only be sourced from Porsche , so can be expensive. One final word of caution, if your car has the Bose sound option , you need to be very careful about updating the software as the Bose amplifier may also require a software update, which if not done correctly can render the amplifier useless.

Though the update can be done by yourself , it's worth making sure you know exactly what to do before starting as an incorrect procedure can render the PCM itself scrap. The software disc to do the level A update can be bought in isolation from porsche , though the level B and DVD drive update software is sold as part of the map update pack which retails at about 350 pounds. Porsche will then charge an additional 1 hours labour to update the software on your system, though may be apprehensive if the navigation hardware isn't original factory fit.
