PCM problem-Microphone unit

Been having problems with the phone unit..The "other end" cannot hear me. Any idea how easy it is to swap-out the microphone; any recommended companies other than OPC?

I know what you mean - I think it's one of those things that is described as "a characteristic of the car, sir!" I got the OPC on the case as a warranty fix and they claimed to have 'moved' the microphone (where to is anybody's guess, as it still seems to be in the same place), but it made no difference - conversation impossible above about 50 mph! Kind of pointless in a Porsche...

Working in Spain at present, but will try fixing an external microphone when I get home now - Thanks for the tip Richard!

Have pulled it out but there is a cable 2/3 inches long and no connector...unless it's trapped behind the instrument cluster

It looks like just a short cable on the parts list. As it is available as a spare part it must be changeable. There aren't any instructions in the workshop manual on how to change it, I'm afraid. Do the cables plug directly on to the back of the mic?

If not you could remove the cluster to see if the wire is trapped. The attached instructions are for a Boxster, but it is the same procedure, except that you have to unclip the hazard warning light switch trim.

Thanks Richard,

I'll order the part first....see what it looks like and then decide on whether the instrument cluster needs removal

Thanks for all your help and advice

The wire is clipped in place behind the instrument cluster and therefore you do have to remove the instrument cluster to get access. If you've got Bose sound pilot, the mic doubles up for both handsfree and the Bose. The handsfree works a treat in my 996TT so you ought to be able to sort it.

Wouldn't have thought so, the audio pilot simply takes a feed off the same mic; for the cost of the mic, it's worth swapping out. When you remove the console, be extra careful when you remove the hazard warning switch/screw as I found it a bit of a nightmare and actually damaged the switch (which I had to replace!)

Just received the microphone....(Special order-2 month wait), swapped it out and it works a treat. Thank you all for you help
