PCM Random Re-boot

Forgive me if this has been raised before, but does any body else have and issues where the PCM just re-boots at random moments.

It did the same on my Cayman but it was normally when I started it up and after several discussions with Porsche and nearly having the maps updated at £350 it transpired that it was to do with the iPod tunes and contacts syncing from my iPhone trying to load all at once when the ignition came on causing it to crash, a quick turn off of the contacts upload and it sorted itself out.

However on the 997 I can just be driving along listening to the radio or iPod and boom, it just re-boots, freezes and then the white screen with the Porsche logo appears and after approximately 20 - 30 seconds it is all back to normal.

Any thought's ?

Ive had this on 3 pcms ,twice on a 987 and once on my 981. every time it reqd a change of unit under warranty. Ive also had problems with the newest one, with remembering some settings. Ive sussed it now, all i do is turn off the unit with the volume control before i leave the car and locking it. Unlocking it and after opening and getting in the car and putting the key in the ignition, just pushing the on off button to turn on the pcm, and since doing this i have had no problems. However, yours needs replacing. You must try and get a video capture of it or they will fanny around changing this and that and telling you theres no problem with it.
good luck

You've not said if it does it with the ipod unattached. Also what system was used to wire the ipod in as it's not easy to get right due to the fibre optic wiring, very likely that's the issue.

I can tell you now, if its rebooting its the PSU in the PCM failing and the hard drive keeps rebooting. If it was anything to do with ancillary inputs, it would just interfere with the main PCM memory being booted up at ignition switch on.

Hi, I had exactly the same issue and after seeking widespread advice and several attempts to reboot using the reset input code I decided that a replacement to a more modern system was a better option. After a couple of weeks the new unit faile and had to be returned for replacement. Not willing to drive round with a gaping hole in the dash board and a rats nest of cables I refitted the original unit and it has run faultlessly since some 8 months ago. All tha Han changed was that in had remove the fuses. Speaking informally to a specialist technician at my local PC he said that that's what they would have done as it forces a had reset whereas the code entry does a soft reset. It worth a try and in my case it worked.
Hope this helps

Just picked up a 997.2 from Porsche, PCM just started rebooting on the way home! Did it 6-7 times and then was ok. I will monotor it, but do you think I should get it looked at and replaced if necessary? Got 2.5 year warranty of course. Good excuse to get them to update the software for free??

Cheers

Cheers guys for the comments, I will see how it goes but will mention it to the dealer I got it from and make them aware.

I've just had my PCM replaced under warranty on a 981 because the original unit kept re-booting. I told them it seemed like a PSU fault but they asked for video evidence, I managed to capture the unit re-booting on my phone and the OPC ordered a replacement immediately.

Mine did this for the first time today. About 10 mins into my drive home the unit paused and went into the white 'Porsche' screen and then re-started. I was listening to tunes at the time via a USB stick. Will start switching the unit off before turning the key to switch off.

I have a 981, PCM was replaced under warranty ~ 30 months ago, due to the re-boot problem. Eventually it died completely. The newish unit has now started to re-boot (twice in 4 days) so I am worried that it is on it's way out too. I have also noticed, this time & previously, that the DAB radio programme selected takes a varying time to start working - possibly due to some code start up time.
Any advice please? Has anyone used a PCM repair firm?

Thanks Bob
