PCM Telephone Microphone

I've been a 997S owner for a couple of months now and loving the car. However, I'm having a small problem with the phone (using SIM card in the dash arrangement). Volume my end is ok - I can hear callers fine and volume is adjustable as per the PCM manual. Problem is at the other end - call recipients are finding it difficult to hear me through the standard microphone (situated somewhere next to the instrument panel according to the PCM Manual). I seem have to shout and even then it's not brilliant. I've leafed through the relevant pages of the manual but cant find anything which will enable me to improve the microphone volume/gain.

Does anyone have a similar experience/cure?

Many thanks,

Adrian

This is a frequent cause of upset amongst gen 1 997 owners, not all cars are affected but the ones that are appear to resist all attempts to fix the problem - check out Rob's (997 administrator) posts on this.

Hi Adrian,

I hate to say it, but this sounds exactly like the long-running phone fault that has affected 997 since launch in 2004. It's totally random and seemingly incurrable, as they've never discovered the cause.

If you have a New-Style Porsche warranty (since Oct 08) then take it to the dealers for them to waste time pursuing, otherwise there's nothing can be done as it's not covered under the old-style Porsche warranty.

Best buy a bluetooth headset for the phone and ignore the one in the car, like many of us have to.

All,

Many thanks for the replies. It's no hassle to use my existing bluetooth headset, although it's a shame nothing can be done to sort the microphone. Perhaps someone will come up with a solution at some stage in the future? Otherwise - cracking car and a big improvement over my pre-facelift 996.

Best regards,

Adrian

There are no fewer that three different types of phone module fitted to the 997/987. The original hardware was supplied by Motorola, then came Harman Beckers own derivative before finally a Porsche sourced item. I beleive there are software updates available for each of the systems , your local OPC sould be able to arrange for this. I have the Motorola based system in my 987 and though its a LHD the sound from the microphone and speech through the speakers is perfectly acceptable.
