PCM Telephone System

Help with my PCM telephone system please.

I have PCM 3.0 with V1.4 in my Gen 2 Carrera. I do not have a 'bluetooth' phone just a basic one and in my previous 996 I just inserted the SIM card in the slot and the car PCM phone system worked fine. However my 997 PCM system does not recognise my SIM instead keeps inviting me to switch 'bluetooth' on. I have checked and the previous owner had(and used) 'bluetooth' and his device is still shown in the devices 'options' page, so the phone system clearly has worked in the past. On the PCM screen I have a picture of a phone icon with a large cross through it which indicates, I think, that the internal phone system is not available or activated. Regrettably the large PCM manual that came with the car is less than helpful. I do not have the Porsche PCM handset - neither do I particularly want one.

Is it possible to activate the SIM card phone element of the PCM through a PS2 tester so I can use my phone SIM or is it a major software change/update? Otherwise I may just have to splash out on a 'bluetooth' mobile phone.

The non-bluetooth phone requires some adtional hardware it is not just a case of adding a SIM and a code enable.

I remember reading something about various sim "profiles" that can be activated. There are, from what I recall, 2 settings.

1) will connect your phone with bluetooth but will disable the phone so text messages etc come to the PCM unit not your phone, a lot of phones don't really support this method, can't really remember what it's called. This is also the setting for inserting your own sim-card.

2) I believe this one is called the HFP (hands free profile) which is a very basic level of bluetooth connectivity...it just routes the call through the audio and you can use the PCM as a dialer and scroll through your contacts etc but it still uses your phone's antenna instead of doing everything in the car. I recall reading that in this mode you can't use the sim tray.

The dealer should be able to switch the profile from 2 to 1 if that's the case...I may be wrong but I remember something along these lines.

Ok just did some research...if you don't have the full blown "telephone module" as an option you can't use the sim tray as there is no, how can i say this, telephone... it's then just "mobile phone preparation" so it just routes your call via bluetooth through the system but the system itself doesn't act as a phone so can't use a sim...if that makes any sense :)

V1.4 requires an OPC to tell it what to do whether to have a Bluetooth phone OR ause a SIM card. the latest sat nav upgrade to 2.4 or whatever , allows you to choose within its own menu. this is supposing you have the full telephone module fitted.

All of the above is all well and good but requires the use of a Bluetooth phone whether the PCM is set to HFP or SAP- which is what the OP was trying to avoid! David, I know things take time to reach Cornwall (even more so now there is no railway!) but you really should get a Bluetooth phone - it will make (car ) life much simpler![;)] If you want full access, i.e Sim Access Profile then Nokia or Samsung is your best bet.

Thank you to all for the helpful advice. It would seem the best option is full 'bluetooth' which gives more flexibility so I will have to go and buy a new phone. Hey ho, the joys of living in Kernow.

If you've had the old phone for ages can't you get a free upgrade? Which network are you on? I have an old Nokia X6 with bluetooth I don't need or use, you can have that as it works with the PCM in Sim Access Profile mode. I think it is unlocked to work with any network but we would have to try it. Cost you a pint though![:)]

It's only the railway that's cut off - not the airways. Don't despair rescue is at hand! :ROFLMAO:

.......or you could always move to civilisation (North Devon).[:)]

Clive.
