PCM Upgrade for 987 Cars

What follows is something of a longwinded introductory post but with some embedded points and/or queries.

Over the past few days I have been through the process of upgrading the PCM on my newly acquired Gen 2 987S. I believe the OPC upgrade offer may have been around for a while but as of this week you can still get it done by them for £150 without affecting warranty. Whether it is worth it or not I can't really make a judgement on because I have only had the car a few days and never spent much time with the old version. On a point of detail I can advise that the system in my car prior to upgrade was V1.41.

As is reported elsewhere the upgrade can take 4hours or more to complete which made waiting a less than attractive option. Instead I took my car up and had a free Cayenne diesel loan car for the day; however OPC would have collected and delivered at no charge if I had wanted them to. I also decided to get cruise retro fitted (again without affecting warranty) and struck a deal with OPC to do both at the same time.

What with the hour going back, it was darkish when I picked up the car but unfortunately it was not until half way home that it occurred to me that the sports chrono clock wasn't illuminated. I guessed that it only lit up when SC was working so thought I'd test my theory. But sadly there was no longer any sign of CHRONO in the instrument cluster display. No sign of NAVI or AUDIO either. It was too late and too dark to turn round and go back to OPC so I left it to the next day.

Having a chance to look round I found PCM now running V2.24 and evidence that Navigation Database Europe dated 06.2013 had been installed. However there was still no sign of communication between the instrument cluster and PCM. 5 minutes Googling suggested this was possibly an installation error or oversight.

So back up to OPC who fixed CHRONO and NAV in the time it takes to drink two coffees and eat a couple of digestive biscuits.

Bearing mind the foregoing, you might reasonably conclude from what now follows that I am a bit slow on the uptake . Because having set off home and successfully used NAV and CHRONO I was a mile or two from OPC when I thought I would put on the radio. No AUDIO [:(] Though still relatively close to OPC, the traffic for a possible return looked unappealing so I thought Sod it.

Moral. if you are thinking of getting PCM upgraded, don't rely on the assurances of OPC Service technician but instead check the whole set up before driving off.

One of the things that I have learned in this is that there seems to be limited communication between PCM and the instrument cluster. So for example units set to km/h and l/100km in PCM will still show up as mph and mpg in the cluster. In Nav you can set a destination in PCM but still need to select NAV in the instrument cluster before junction pictograms appear.

The other issue is that my original PCM Manual is 03/08 and the upgrade does not include a new manual so I am unclear what TEL functions to expect. Does anyone have pdf of a Manual for PCM 3?

Cheers.

Not exactly the "premier service" you'd expect from a PC Nick after you've shelled out £500+. Clearly the technician hadn't checked out everything thoroughly after the PCM upgrade and cruise control installation. Rather thankful that I chose to forego the (expensive) PCM option for my 987.2 CS in favour of a £90 TomTom. PCM trials and tribulations aside, hope you're enjoying the latest acquisition and welcome to this part of the forum. Jeff

I did wonder about TomTom but I am now so used to PCM that the extra £60 didn't seem too bad a delta. Great little car which I already like a lot. LSD, short shifter and a sparkling 3.4 DFI motor. Yes please. [:)]

Nick, based on what you have said about units in the PCM being different to the Instrument Display, I would say that it is still not set up correctly. In my 991 If I change mpg to l/100km in the Settings Screen on the Instrument Display then the PCM also changes. Re the nav map junction pictograms not appearing in the Instrument Display as you approach a junction there should be a Setting under NAV in the Instrument Display that enables Auto Zoom. (You need to enter the Settings Menu from the main Vehicle Function screen and scroll down to Nav). Have you done a side by side comparison of the PCM settings with your Turbo S? Apart from display features exclusive to the Turbo S the menus should be the same. Based on my experience of a retrofit PSE its reprogramming the car systems that causes these problems, for example it took another day for the OPC to work out how to program my car to enable the PSE to auto select when Sport was selected.
