PCM1 - Phone Module - Assistance

Hi All,

I am having a bit of trouble getting my car kit working. PCM1 with phone module.

Orange have sent me 2 Sim Cards now, both of which worked in my BlackBerry but when placed in the phone kit it recognises the Sim, allows me to view phonebook/settings etc but after 30 seconds of 'Network Search' it states 'Only Emergency'

It's very frustrating. The previous owner had the car kit working so unless something has happened in the fortnight since I purchased, I can't understand what is going wrong.

Any advice/assistance/similar stories are greatly appreciated.

Regards - Jon

Have you got an O2 or Vodaphone SIM you could try? I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think PCM1 might not work on Orange.

Hi Jon,

I have PCM1 & orange and mine doesnt work.

Mine is a 98 / R.

When I looked into it previously I think I found they were incompatible. Orange, and all current networks are digital and PCM1's are only suitable for Analogue networks.

I had Halfords install a Parrot In Car Kit (cant remember number but can check) which works very well with my phone. Added a microphone and utilised the existing car speakers and muted radio automatically when phone was in use.

Cheers,

Rob

Thanks for the advice guys.

Well, I'm stuck on Orange due to a lengthy 18 month contract so Voda and O2 out of the question really as I'd rather be using my allocated free minutes when calling out and don't want to bother with paying to divert calls etc.

Rob - Am I right in thinking that the Parrot utilises Bluetooth technology to connect to your existing phone rather than a second sim card? Can I ask how much it cost to get that installed? Perhaps it could be wired into the existing microphone that exists in the car, will have to look into this further.

Finally, I think I have read that PCM2 module cannot be retro fitted into an original PCM1 car, is this correct?

Cheers - Jon

pcm 2 module runs on a system called most and is fibre optic therefore would not be feasible to fit to your motor..

as stated orange never worked on pcm1 and idealy i if i were you would get some type of bluetooth device fitted to car, parrot do a good kit which picks your phone and its phonebook up when you get in the car without having to pair it and has a display screen with caller id..

A bit off topic but Orange have recently changed their terms and conditions giving people a free get out of jail(contract) card.. goggle it and you'll be surprised if you did actuallly want out..

PCM1- tape cassette is only Voda and O2 (either GSM 900 or 1800- I forget which) so single band
PCM2 - CD slot - dual band

Unfortunately the loophole has now closed.

They said last month "We will be changing the ToS (Terms of Service)" (this included several price rises). This opened a clause in the current ToS that said effectively "If we change the ToS you have the right to cancel your contract" This led to loads of people canceling so on the 12th they said "We are not now going to change the ToS"

Jon,

I have the Parrot 320LS Colour. Was fitted by Halfords in-store (well, in the car park anyway). Link below.....

They go through their compatability list and some car stereos require an additional and EXPENSIVE cable adapter. I checked, and you dont need it with the PCM1 - get them to double check if they suggest it.

Guy at Halfords did a decent job but think out where you want the unit to be placed first. They tried in a few places and it kept coming off the shiny dash or leather or obscuring dials etc. In the end I used a bit of blue tac and squished it infront of the Sat Nav Disk where the plastic is nice and flat - dont worry abou it covering the disk area as you never need to take it out.

I have had several SonyEriccson and now a HTC Touch HD all on Orange and onece its synced all you need to do is leave the Blue Tooth on your phone on and as soon as your in the car and running it automatically switches from the phone to the car. Really couldnt be simpler!

Can send you a photo of where i put mine if you like.

All the best,

Rob
