Is there an alternative to the Porsche Navtech updated sat nav disc.
I have a 2001 996 tt and wondered if there were compatible discs to buy at a cheaper price, would an updated disc also bring with it goodies such as postcode entry or is tha prohibited by the dated PCM 1
thanks

I never found a cheaper alternative for a PCM1 disc (OK £15 cheaper but is it worth the risk?), even PCM2 doesn't offer postcode that I'm aware of...
felt a bit ripped off on both occasions, but buy OEM and thats what we have to put up with..

The PCM1 system is poorly supported by Porsche.

I tried many forums, contacting NavTech and other people and the only way to get the disk is from an OPC.

NavTech DO supply the DATA ONLY to Porsche and Porsche then format etc. that into something the the PCM can read.

I upgraded my PCM1 disk last year, I think the most recent date from OPC with 2003 (meaning the data was possibly up to 1 year old).

The disk wouldnt work so took it back to the dealer and they upgraded the PCM Firmware.

No postcode searching but it now has more up to date roads and maps and also allows me to STORE A CURRENT position which the previous version didnt allow me to.

Thats interesting that they can upgrade the firmware, i checked on the PCM and it does show a version that the PCM is at , does anyone know what the latest version the PCM 1 should be set at.

Hi,
I have a 1999 996 with PCM fitted, However I went out in my friends 2003 boxter S today and the maps on his PCM are 100 times better.

I have heard people mentioning upgrading the firmware and maps for the PCM, but can I upgrade my 1999 PCM so it will have the same maps and naivigation as a 2003 model? - or is that just wishfull thinking?
Cheers
Paul

i think you can as i asked the same question before... but it costs approx £1.5k!!!!! [:(]

I tried, but failed to resolve this issue with PCM1 (see earlier postings on PCM1) because I have the 8 bit processor to read my discs. Apperently the Opel/Vauxhall nav discs work in the 16 bit processors but to upgrade to the 16 bit version cost around a £1000. (see my post of 24/05/05 for more info)
