PCM2.1 and TMC in 996

After 10 years of driving sensible company cars I am looking to purchase a 02/03 996 Cabrio, therefore I have spent some time reading alot of the 996 forum and I hvae come to the conclusion that the PCM 2 CD based satnav that was supplied as an option for the 996 is not capable of TMC.

Am I correct??

Having waited 18months for Audi to enable TMC on it's sat nav systems I now find the availability of this information extremely useful.

The new satnav fitted to the 997 appears to provide TMC capability, so is there any way to put the latest DVD TMC enabled satnav in a 996 fitted with the MOST bus.

Sensible idea about buying a non-sensible car!

I'm not a PCM expert, but I'm fairly sure that PCM 2.0 is not TMC capable. I also can't help with regard to fitting 2.1 to a 996, but I would doubt that it would be cost-effective. Why not consider a Pioneer AVIC-HD1BT double-DIN system which will do the same (and probably better) than PCM, at half the price.

Hi Richard,

Many thanks for your response, all of the cars I have looked at thus far have had BOSE, which I have understood the forum correctly means I am probably looking at having to hav this removed as it uses the MOST bus. Which i assume means ripping half the car apart?

I have BOSE in my current car and any replacement stereo system would have to of a similar quality sound wise.

My other option is to sacrifice another 7K and the cabriolet and buy a 997, but that seems way too much of a compromise just to get TMC.

Does the PMC 2.1 have an external video input?? If so does anyone know of a company doing a TMC box that gives a video oputput that could at least give me the info albeit with out the smart overlay facility.

PCM 2.0, in the 996 range is TMC capable. However, Porsche never purchased a licence for TMC in the UK from ITIS who run it. Therefore, on the CD-ROM in the PCM2, the access codes are not included so TMC does not work in the UK. It will work perfectly fine in the rest of Europe though....[&:] Aston Martin have the same issue on the Vantage to this day!

In the 9x7, only the latest version of the hardware, firmware, and mapping discs support TMC in the UK. If you are buying 2nd hand and TMC is an issue for you, ensure your dealer confirms in writing as a "Condition" of the sale, that the vehicle has the latest hardware, firmware and mapping disks, as Porsche will not pay for the ugrade (see lots of threads on the 997 board).

You cannot retrofit a 9x7 2.1 PCM into a 9x6 vehicle as the MOST system wont understand what is going on - maybe if you had access to a PIWIS you could fiddle around, but even then I doubt that would work.

Sorry Paul, I didn't make it clear - PCM 2.1 is the version used in the 987 & 997, so is TMC capable.

I only have wiring diagrams for 996, so I can't compare the physical connections of 2.0 and 2.1. I would suspect that they might be the same, especially as it is version 2.1 and not "3.0" (if you see what I mean). You could try contacting an OPC to ask the question, but I suspect that unless they have a specific instruction sheet to say that it is possible, then the answer will be 'no'. (Ask an OPC if they could retrofit cruise or OBC, for example).

Sorry I'm not being much use. I'm not sure of the implications of removing PCM 2.0 and Bose. There are a few people here who have retrofitted PCM 2.0, but I don't know anyone who has removed it.

Hi Richard

Have you got wiring info for the PCM. Would love to have it as I can't find it anywhere. I am trying to get a bluetooth solution.

Many Thanks Graham
