PCM2 MP3 excellent

I've just discovered the MP3 capability on a recently delivered 997 C2S and am well pleased with it... but suprised not much is made about it by the dealer. Heres what I have found so far:

- Also works fine with Windows Media Player format music files (.WMA) So no need to convert if you already have a large collection of WMA
- Uses Folder system, a la CR changer function. ie each recorded CD appears as a different folder item, navigated using the PCM buttons or multi funtion steering wheel
- Each folder item can be sub navigated to the track list using the same selection actions above
- Each recording contains full artist and track textual data, displayed on the PCM, unlike a regular audio CD, so much better
- CD changer/Ipod interface not required: - I can fit 20'ish full CD's on a single CD-RW disc. So given the 2 glove box CD holders, plus the CD in the drive I can fit 60 favourite CD's in the car (about 4.5Gbytes)

Would be nice to see them make the same sort of progress with the appalling phone and nav systems

Now all I need to do is find out how to mute just the audio volume and have it remain off when I next start the ignition. Any one have a clue about this

Hi

I too have been using the mp3 function and agree that it is great. I have a couple of questions though;

How do you change from one folder to another without having to scroll through each of the tracks?

What quality of mp3 are you using "" I encoded mine at 320 to preserve quality but this may be overkill! I only fit about 5/6 albums on one disk.

Finally, I have noticed that if I turn the music off by switching the PCM off, when I turn the music on again the MP3 cd has advanced several tracks as though the disk has never actually stopped spinning. It doesn't seem to happen if I allow the music to go off when I switch the engine off only if I am driving the car with the PCM off. I'm not sure I have explained that very well but does this happen to you?

Regards

Ashley

Does the "back" button get you back to the last folder?

I use 128K standard, and quality is perfectly OK. I'm no music perfectionist numpty though. Base is especially good from the sub woofer, sometimes too overpowering

ISTR the PCM reamins active in the background when you select off for both the Sat Nav and audio. Goodnes know why but probably uses the same rationale for the audio mute question in hand... ie no good reason. It tells you thi in the manual, cant remember where though

cheers

Thanks for the reply.

I've now 'looked beyond the end of my nose' and realised that it's easy to change between folders by pressing the audio button - you get a track list and everything!!!

Interesting about the PCM staying active - can't think why they would have done that.

Cheers
Ashley
