Performance Chips

I don't want to jump the gun here as I know that Stephen Darnell has been corresponding with Steve Wong regarding a performance chip for CS cars, but I though I would share the email I have received from Steve Wong regarding his chip for euro cars.

His website, which is full of personal endorsements for his product plus dyno charts, is www.911chips.com. The text of the email he sent me is below. As he notes, the price of the chips goes up on 1 Dec.

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your interest in the Porsche chips. My work on the Euro chips
as of now is complete and I do not expect to make any changes to it in the
future. It is nice improvement over the OEM chip, and a more efficient
program. Several customers around the world are currently running the chip
on their 930/20 Euro motors, and they are extremely impressed. You can find
their reviews on my Reviews page, with signatures of Euro motors. One
customer has noted to me how my chip unquestionably outperforms his
expensive FVD Brombacher performance chip. My recent version of the
European chip implements a triple map, user selectable as to which program
he so chooses. By plugging or unplugging the pin 10 connector by the DME,
the user can automatically switch back to the 231 hp European chip map. In
general, the greatest improvement is going to be in the response and low to
midrange torque improvement. Top end horsepower increase is variable,
anywhere from 6 to 10 hp greater, depending on how aggressive one want to be
with the full throttle chip mappings. By advancing the timing, and tweaking
the fuel curve, we can achieve a greater increase, however, this increases
the fuel octane requirement, so I usually prefer to be conservative in this
manner unless a customer specifically requests it.

You can buy now to prove it to yourself if the improvement is worth it, or
wait until later. I guarantee full satisfaction or return it for a full
refund. However, bear in mind, by the first of December, the pricing will
raise an additional $50, so it may be in your best interest to purchase
before then. If you have any other questions, or if I can be of further
assistance, feel free to contact me.

Best regards,
Steve Wong

Everything I have heard puts Steves chips as amongst the best available - particularly in driveability - I am considering it for the future. Keep us informed if you try one

Ive also had a quick chat with Steve Wong a few days ago regarding the Euro chip. I asked about keeping the standard rev limit, and raised a question of what effect would the chip have if I was forced to use 95 RON fuel due to lack of 97RON (or 98 RON Optimax). Here's his reply :

"Hi Anil,

Perhaps you may be interested in my new triple map chip for the 87-89
European Carrera 3.2. With it, you will be able to select one of three
different maps,
1) a performance map for a Euro motor fitted with an O2 sensor
2) a performance map for a Euro motor without O2 sensor
3) stock factory Euro Porsche mapping.

To select between map 2 and 3, you would either connect or disconnect
terminal 10 at the DME, the two brown wires that come out of the DME harness
just inches away from the DME. You other option can also be to just dial
the Fuel Quality Switch to position 4 to retard total ignition by 2.79
degrees for a safe margin. http://www.911chips.com/fuelsys.html

I have customers running the European performance mapping with their Euro
3.2 here in the U.S. using 91 CLC U.S. octane for quite a while now and no
problems or pinging. This would be equivalent to 96 RON octane in the U.K.
With 95 RON, I am not absolutely certain as we do not have 90 octane here,
but if it were me, I would just do one of the above options if I ever had
those occasions where 95 RON was the only fuel available.

I can also program the chip to just operate on 95 RON for you if that is
what you prefer. The hp difference will be about 4 hp less at full throttle
than the 98 RON chip. Retaining the stock 6520 rev limiter is no problem at
all. I think you will find in either instance, a dramatic improvement in
overall power, response, torque, and drivability. It is the best chip
available from anywhere in the world, not just my humble opinion, but those
who have owned other tuner's chips. You are welcome to try it for yourself
risk free, and if it doesn't work out for you, just return it and I'll
refund you. If you have any other questions, or are interested in trying
out a chip, feel free to ask.

Best regards,
Steve Wong"

I think I may go ahead and order this week one as he does offer a full money back guarantee, and reading the reviews he looks like he stands by his product.

Cheers

Anil

Jamie, I will order as well. I want to wait until Steve Darnell responds before ordering. There is a reason but not one for online. If we see who else is interested in the next couple of days, we might get a discount for bulk order [:D]. Perhaps we hold fire until early next week.

These chips are USD230 each but we will be hit for VAT and duty on top of that, so I am not sure where the ÂŁ135 comes from.

Richard

I was rather hoping that we might avoid the 'duty' if the wording on the label on the package is suitably vague. I've got away with it before. If they say it's a gift then they can't make you pay the duty on it !
I'd forgotten about the VAT (full UK rate ???) - so maybe ÂŁ160 then !

Anyway I agree that we should try a group order - anyone else interested ?

Richard, would you mind emailing me offline about the 'issue' ?

Thanks,

Jamie

Off the shelf chips are one avenue to look at but the best road to follow is to have a chip individually programmed to your car.

A lot of this years Club Championship cars with reprogrammable ECU's went down this route, including the 3.2 Carrera of Colin Broster which won Class 1.

Wayne Schofield has his Chipwizards website here. FYI I believe there is also a problem with some of the later ECU's that can cause rough running for about half a minute after the car is started. This can also be programmed away.

In case you are wondering I have no involvement with Chipwizards, just huge respect for the guy that does them. Such a pity that the DITC unit on my 924 Carrera GT can't be breathed upon [:(]

Hi all:

I'm new to this forum but I can definitely endorse SteveW chips!

I was always envious of the Euro 911 CS's because you guys had the stock 231hp while we were stuck with approx 217hp. After talking to Steve Darnell and others over here I decided to opt for Steve's chip, Dansk Euro pre-muffler, Borla muffler and K&N filter - now I'm up to 243hp (with 91 octane) and loving it! Now I just have to pass the smog inspection in April - may have to do some retrofit.

I would be interested in ordering one as well.
Do you think we could get a quantity discount?
Please keep me in mind if you are going to order.
Thanks

Better than a quantity discount would be someone in the US who would post as a gift - that'll save us at least the VAT!

If Steve would send out the chip to an intermediary who would send it on then it's almost legal

Roy

My car has a few mods ie, K&N filter, Autothority Mass Flo sensor, pre silencer bypass and B&B sports exhaust.
Am I correct in assuming that a custom chip as offered by Chipwizard is the best way as the 911chips version is for standard cars?
I would hate to end up with the wong chip!!!
But if this is true then even mildy modded cars may not benefit from an off the shelf product ( no matter how good) and the custom eprom the best way to go.
Mike

In setting up the race 3.2 carreras I seem to recall that Wayne has found out that there are quite significant difference between individual cars. This means that each car ends up with different ignition timing and fuel delivery settings. One program customised for one car could pink like hell if used in another, on the other side reverse the situation and one engine is not being optimised.

As the race cars are all to manufacturers spec when you start making modifications, like MAF etc, then a custom chip can certainly reap benefits.

But if this is true then even mildy modded cars may not benefit from an off the shelf product ( no matter how good) and the custom eprom the best way to go.

I don't want to sound like a school teacher, but you should take a look at the 911chips website. Steve W's chips are customised depending on the modifications that you have performed, the fuel you will use and the rev limit you want etc. His own car is modified much like yours.

No doubt a completely custom chip may be a slightly better solution however it will cost you somewhat more (no doubt).

Perhaps anyone who is genuinely interested should contact Steve D and myself and we will try to organise something for tomorrow (before the price increases).

Please sir, I have done my homework sir and looked at the 911chips site sir ( mummy and daddy let me).
I will write out 100 times
I must pay attention

Hi everyone, thanks for your orders, and just want to let you know they were sent out on December 3rd. Let us know your impressions and how the chips perform for you. I think you'll find quite a change in the vehicle's character. The part throttle gains are much more significant than the full throttle dyno sheets show. To many guys it seems as much as 20 hp has been gained in these regions. For example, if you take a portion of the part throttle maps, where say 40 hp is produced, and increase the power here by 10 hp, the car will have increased power by 25% at this point. Assuming the first 25 hp is used just to overcome frictional resistance from sources such as the transmission, tires, and wind, that leaves 25 hp for acceleration, whereas before you only had 15. That is a 66% increase in power for acceleration. I have found that while some retuning the simple full throttle fuel and ignition curves above 4000 make some additional hp, the much more complex part throttle curves are just as important if not more so because here is where most of us spend a majority of our time, and where the factory programming has left quite a bit on the table. This is the most difficult region to tune, but gives the greatest rewards.

Tom's dyno sheets from his Club Sport have recently been posted online if anyone is interested.

I look forward to hearing your comments bef/after fitting guys, I'm still a bit cynical but trust most of your opinions, so post soon please
Mike

I would also be interested in the results before I venture down this Mod path..........

The chips haven't arrived yet (have they Richard ?), but once they do I'm sure we'll all write up our experiences. At the very least it will be a first outing for the socket set that Santa's bringing me (if I've been a good boy !).

Jamie

No, they haven't arrived yet. I sent my Uncle an email to see if he had them yet and await his reply. He should have got them maybe Monday/Tuesday, but if US post is anything like UK post then who knows. He will repackage and courier to me - so I hope to get them next week.

I will certainly post experiences, however, in the meantime see here:

Another happy customer with a UK car.
