Petrol cap

Heres a little niggle which maybe someone can help me with. The petrol cap on my 2004 996 has a security strap or rather a rubber strip which fixes to the car as well as the cap and which has broken. Is repair impossible - ie do I have to buy a new cap complete with the strip or is there an alternative ( apart from leaving it as it is)...?
 
You can't buy the strap any more, and I don't think the new caps come with them. The caps are fairly cheap at £9.47 inc VAT, so it wouldn't cost a fortune to find out. Part number 996.201.241.03.
