How essential is high RON petrol such as Optimax or other premium petrols? Given its now over £1 litre and my Boxster S guzzles fuel round town (<23 mpg) could I use branded unleaded without loss of performance?. What about supermarket petrols? OPC tut tutted at the idea.

I use branded unleaded all the time and don't notice any performance issues- the user booklet does say that the engine management sytstem will adapt.

Until Optimax came out I used to fill up at Tescos with no ill effects.

I think several million other drivers do so every day! [&:]

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Stick to high octane fuel because:
- your Boxster engine was designed to use it
- my careful comparison of fuel consumption (986 and 987) shows the improved mpg pays for the higher cost
- it improves performance.

It is surely madness to buy a £40K car and then compromise it for just an extra 6p/litre, less than £100/year for 10K miles @ 30 mpg.

I've found the same, provided the engine that is designed to take advantage of the higher octane fuel.

Such as a Porsche engine...for example.
