Petrol Filler Cap Question?

Hi All

When I filled up the car at the weekend, I unscrewed the filler cap, and the thin cord of rubber that keeps the cap connected to the car (and allows you to hang it down towards the wheel) has parted company with the car :0(

Looks like it simply failed, because it looks like the rubber has deterioated and split.

Now I know its not the end of the world, but I'd like to fix it.

Does anyone know if its a simple part to buy and fit yourself? I assume the cord is part of the filler cap assembly. The online PET doesn't show a corded cap

Oh yes 2004 Boxster S Anniversary (550)

Why rubbers should be deterioating on a 4/5 year old car .... over to Porsche QA :0(

Thanks .... thats the bit

Looks like the 'loop' has failed on the end of mine ... can anyone recall how it fits? Is there some lug it goes over ?

I seem to recall this was a popular "mod" on early cars - they didn't come with the retainer you see!

It should be readily attainable from Porsche (although all I can find in the PET is "Fuel Cap with clip" 996 201 241 02

The rubber retainer is supposed to allow you to hang the cap off the little bracket in the filler flap - and therefore away from the car body [:D]

I (used) to let the cap hang down not using the little bracket, as this allows the cap to swing nicely, and is more prone to hitting hit the bodywork :0(

I thought it best to let if dangle near the car, and near the tyre ... which seems much more safe

Call me obssesive .... oh yes

Trip to Porsche then ... Parts that is

Cheers

Tim

Thanks ... at least I'm not the only one this has happened to

Porsche need to cut corners somewhere I suppose
