Petrol filler cap

I've just had my car MOT'd and the inspector talked me through a few of the checks, mainly because I don't think he knew how to open the bonnet, engine lid, filler cap, operate all of the lights, etc. Anyway the first check was on the petrol filler cap. He didn't explain why but he said that if I didn't have the correct cap then he wouldn't go any further.

Anyone know anything about incorrect filler caps?

Thankfully mine was 'correct' and he went through the full test.

Sounds a little harsh , have a look here Brian, hope it helps

When I had mine done a couple months ago they never even checked the fuel cap. I know for sure as I was in the car all the time as the MOT guys assistant was off sick and he had me turning the wheel and doing the lights etc... I dont remember any MOT I've had with this being done but I guess they are supposed to according to the link.

Cheers

Andy

We get 5 points I think for not checking filler cap. All that is required is that the cap seals against the filler neck - the original push in emergency cap sold in petrol stations wasn't good enough. The newer kind with the twist bit in the middle are OK.

VOSA Examiners do incognito inspections on testing centres and they debit 'points' for things not checked by testers - too many points and you lose your licence to test, for a long time in some cases. Wrote an article on MOT computerisation a while back, had to get right into all this, very interesting stuff (IMO).

Good site on MOT's at www.motester.co.uk.

Just had car mot'd (and I thought very thoroughly..)

He did open the filler FLAP, (well cap according to an earlier, now edited post) but then just shut it again.[&:]

do you mean filler flap chap? is that all he did? or are you being ironic my lord?

(irony - like coppery or bronzey 'cept it's got iron in it)

what MOT tester in his right mind would waste his time on yours - that car is straight out of the box

check the VIN number, get the mileage and scribble the ticket

you edited it - lol, you crack me up

don't thnx me, was being very cheeky after my long absence from these hallowed halls

you can give me a smack in the mouth FOC next time we meet

I've only ever had one visit from an icognito in ten years of testing. Perhaps I've just been lucky...
Always great to get a 911 in for a MOT, the customer loves it when you know where each little switch and knob is, and then point out things that only a 911 owner would know about. Eventually they have to ask if I've got one....
