Petrol fumes/odour inside cabin

Just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar problem with their 944. I have a 1985 944 that has a petrol odour inside the cabin.

The problem seems more acute when the fuel tank is full of petrol. It also gets worse if the windows/sunroof are open while the car is driven "" I guess this has something to do with a reduction of air pressure inside the cabin which effectively sucks in the fumes. I can't be completely certain but I have a suspicion that the fumes are coming from the vicinity of the rear compartment.

I've checked the fuel filler pipe and expansion pipes inside the rear compartment. There are no signs of dampness and all the jubilee-clip clamps seem tight. I've also checked the level sender and all seems ok.

I've also checked underneath the car to see if the problem is caused by loose unions near the fuel pump and the fuel filter. All the jubilee-clip clamps have been replaced and are tight.

If anyone has had this problem in the past or know what else I can check then I'd be grateful for any advice. The search goes on! Many thanks.

If it's not petrol, you might be getting exhaust fumes in - quite a common problem & much more noticeable when windows/roof are open

either it's coming in past the hatch seal - maybe see if one of the catches is a bit seized, or try adjusting the lock pins to pull it tighter
or it's coming past the seals of the rear light clusters

I don't know how long you have had your 944, but when Tony bought his 944S2, we had the most horrendous smell of petrol in the boot and then found the carpet was saturated. What had happened was that the previous owner had screwed a CD changer down in the boot which he removed before parting with the car and the screws had gone into and perforated the petrol tank!!!! As this was found immediately after purchasing the car from an OPC, they had to remedy the situation and had to order a new petrol tank from Germany.

Hope you are not suffering something similar.

If I was a betting man I would go for the first thing Andrew mentioned in his post above ie the sender cap -- it is easy for this large cap to be improperly screwed down or the rubber gasket to be out of position when doing that.
