Hi, hope someone can help - started getting strong whiff of petrol in the car when the windeow or roof is open but only when tank is half full or more - no signs of a leak in the tank that I can see - anyone else had this or suggest places to look?

hi i've had a few cars in 944 s2 and 968 with the same problem.and it was the hard pipes that goes to the fuel filter and over the rear axle.you may have a small pin hole..cheers carl

I've had a really good look underneath and the pipes are all rust free (amazingly so, might have been replaced but NAFAIK) & well covered in barrier spray - no signs of leaks in the pipes or at the joins, no smell of petrol from underneath - I'm no expert though...

There is a slight smell of vapours when you open the door in the morning - soon disperses but then reappears sporadically - doesn't seemt to be linked to any hard braking, cornering etc which might have meant a hole high up in the tank?

Next stop, the LPS via the fire extinguisher shop!

Only a thought, but I seem to remember a thread here or on Titanic years ago where a filler neck had become detached? Not easy to get at, but possible.

See where you're coming from; some more developments on way home tonight; could only get about £25 worth in an near empty tank this evening at my regular pump and the fuel guage has also developed a serious case of the wobbles...if the filler neck had become detached, I'm guessing fuel would have poured out somewhere but no sign and no smell of petrol in the car. bit of a puzzle.
