Petrol Smell in 993S Cabin

TD2015

Does anyone have any idea why I might have a slight but distinct smell of petrol in the cabin but not outside the car? The petrol tank etc. has been out over the past year but there was a distinct petrol smell before it's removal. (It's most noticeable when first getting into the car and seems to be less once driving.)

I spoke with Adrian Crawford (Plymouth Independent) and he thought one possibility could be a problem with the fuel tank's breather pipe.

Any other thoughts?

Technical Service Bulletin 9401 relates to the Fuel Filler Pipe.

If a customer complaint of fuel odor is reported, first check all connections on the fuel tank, filler pipe and cap for tightness and proper sealing.

Presurising the fuel tank with approx 3 PSI and using an electronic hydrocarbon detector will find very small leaks which may be possible on the top of the filler neck or on the hose connections.

If the fuel filler pipe shows signs of leakage in these areas, it must be replaced.

If the fuel filler pipe is found to be leaking, only the fuel filler pipe with a metal band at the top should be used for repairs.

Dear TD - I get the same slight odour as you describe -only when entering the vehicle after it has been standing in my garage with no smell outide of the car. Its a small garage also and not greatly ventilated so if it was from the filler then surely you wold smell it in the garage too?

Thanks guys,

The previous thread Mark pointed me to (his posted URL) exactly describes the smell i.e. a mixture of leather and petrol. I'll follow the tips given and see if it makes a difference.

Cheers,

Jon

Hi,

Interesting you're getting the same thing happening.

I still have it occasionally now, but it does seem to be intermittent. It's certainly better than it was and mainly accumulates after the car's been stood for a while.

The problem I had was that I was and still am the only one who seems to be able to smell it! Also, as the problem rights itself on the way to the workshop, its been a b****r to get identified and fixed.

It seems like its a bit of an anomaly really. If you get a proper fix I'd be really interested.

Cheers,

Chris
