Petrol smell in car

a loose petrol cap or one where the screw threads not been done up streight will let the fumes through and they will get into the cabin.
i found this out the hard way[:-]

Check very carefully around the lip/seam of the tank which locates it into the front boot. Original tanks have a rubberised coating which can hide corrosion if at some time this coating has been breached any where.
I had the same symptoms as you where, as the petrol was lower than the seam in the tank, say less than half full, then the smell became less. My tank was beyond repair unfortunately.
