PIAA Silicone Wiper Blades

Tried them on my 968 and my Golf - not overly impressed. The silicone effect is good, but the frame which holds the blade is a bit weedy so they judder and squeak. Bosch Super Plus are far better - no judders, no squeaks nice thick frame and a big spoiler which keeps it in place at high speed. The wipe action is much cleaner too.

The problem I had with my wipers was that they left an unwiped rectangle right in front of my eyeline, unless the rain was really heavy.

I tried changing the blades & bingo, no more smear....until about 3 or 4 usages later when exactly the same smear reappeared. I can not believe that 964s go through wiper blades that quickly, my friend who has a 3.2 has no problem at all with his wipers and by the looks of the number of posts on here, it does not appear to be a particularly hot topic.

If I go with silicone wiper blades PIAA or Bosch or otherwise, with those airofoils (which look a bit silly so I would try to avoid them unless someone could guarantee their effectivelness) will this help?

I try to avoid driving her in the rain, but when I have to, I like to see where I am going.

Two thoughts - if your windscreen is old it may be scarred and that causes blades to wear more - use some paint clay on the windscreen and it should help - make sure you use the lubrication in abundance. Also, the 964 wiper blade is slightly different to a standard one of the same length one - there is an extra curve angle - so a bosch of the same length from halfords is not the same as a bosch unit supplied to porsche - maybe that is causing an issue also?

Just to add to what Alex has said, it's worth making sure that you have the latest double spring wiper arms too - they make a huge difference because they increase the downforce onto the screen. OPC only as far as I know but well worth it.

Regards

Dave

Upgrading to the dual spring wiper arms has been on my list for a while but always got relegated for something else. Last year they were retailing at about £50 a pair but are now around £90 a pair! Is this part of the Porsche classic parts policy I keep hearing about? i.e. as your car gets older the prices of parts (that they will inevitably need) will be going up lots and lots?!

Is this what you mean (looks like 2 springs)?

Though, looking at the price, best stick to my local PC!

Yes those are they Colin. I've bought some small items off that ebay seller before and later found out they would have been cheaper from the OPC especially with PCGB discount. However they're not going to be much cheaper than the price he is advertising.

Indeed, good blades I have found. Have had them over a year on my Focus ST and are on the list for the C4. So long as the screen is properly alcohol cleaned/degreased etc on installation then the wipers ran on the dry screen for five minutes - perfect. The coating left behind repels rainwater (in any condition) making the whoole experience much clearer I found. Would definately recommend. I picked them up from some reseller website (Cornwall somewhere).

Alex, are you sure about this? I've discovered PIAA don't do blade short enough for 964 so have ordered Bosch but not from OPC.
Thanks

I was told this by a specialist when I was trying to get my windscreen better. I have no reason to not believe it - it certainly fits Porsche's business model - always specify something slightly different eg, N rated tyres although there is some evidence that those are the same as same make/model! For the low cost I would stick to the Porsche supplied one - but as you have ordered Bosch see how they go. I had Bosch ones fitted and then went Porsche parts way and I think I noticed the Porsche one hug the ends better on the glass. But it may my imagination.

What I did notice that made a big difference was using a clay bar on the window - old wind screens of course. I also tried some of the rain-x type product which helped to a point although in light drizzle it seemed to smear more.

Having driven my other newer Porsche, there are two huge differences - the wipers and the lights. The 964 has many great features, but not those areas.

The best I have achieved is to clean/clay bar the windscreen, use Porsche blades, the double spring arms, and a good washer fluid. And for the lights, fitting piaa (or equivalent) brighter bulbs - never went the whole hog of putting xenon's in.
