Picked up a 944 today

Thoroughly chuffed with it, once I've given it a machine polish I will post a pic or two.

I am changing all 4 shocks on Monday as the front end is so wallowy but that was the main tool in my bargaining.

I expected to have to do a few little jobs so if anyone can advise on them that would be much appreciated.

First one is that when I pull the indicator stalk back to flash the beams, nothing happens. However when the dips are on I can flash the beams no problem. Any suggestions?

The other is no noise from the washer pump. It was too dark when I got home to starting fiddling with a multimeter but I will obviously checked for power first. If not maybe the earth?

Finally, the heating will either be cold or hot, there's no in between. If I twist the dial to minimum the air temp cools right down. When I move it just off minimum the air temp goes to full heat. With every movement of the dial I can hear a little motor whirring in the dash.

Any help much appreciated and despite the niggles I'm looking forward to owning a 944 again, the last time was 14 years ago!

Those are all m inor things to expect on an old car, so sounds good so far!

We won't answer anything until we see pictures [;)]

What model/year is it?

I am confident its mechanically sound, it has good sills and went through the last MoT with only an advisory on rear tyres. Its done 500 miles or so since then so I am hoping it will go through again once I've done the little jobs.

Its a D-plate 'S' and compared to a Lux I viewed last week it knocks spots of it and has extensive history. It drives 98% good but will cover that in another thread as its not a pressing issue.

Got a busy weekend so pictures will be done Monday [;)]

Sounds good!

The heater has me fooled. They default to hot if theres a failure, so you aren't left in a near-death experience in a German winter, but I've not heard of the temp adjustment working max/min only. I'm sure it's not a complicated one though.

Mine does that, it also makes a sucking noise (like a vacuum hose has split) when I press the recirc button, Just another thing to add to the to do list. [:)]

If no noise from the washer pump the most likely this is that the pump has died... they do after 25 years of scale and other grot. A new pump is cheap but its a £$%^&*&!! of a job as you have to get the washer bottle out, which in turn means you need to move the headlamp lift mechanism, etc. etc. Not difficult but a real PITA.

For the headlamp flash, check the live feed to the stalk. If nothing at the stalk track back from there.

Enjoy and good luck.

My heater did the same thing... it turned out to be the intake temperature sensor. It's under the plastic scuttle panel and should read 10k ohms at 25 degrees. They fail with low resistance which means the brains of the heater thinks you are in the desert and won't turn on the heat unless it's on max or demist.
If you can use a soldering iron you can replace with a new thermistor which costs pennies. In fact I have a few if you want me to pop one in the post...

Good news, and wise choice another S on the block [8D]

If the lights are not on dip, the lights in the bumper flash as the light pods don't rise to flash.

Looking forward to pics, are you able to get along to the Rutland meet and Show her off ?

Ah I thought the pods rose up to flash! They did on another car I had with pop up lights and I just assumed it was the same on the 944!

I haven't looked at dates yet of any of the meets but will do so and certainly attend where I can.

A quick check and it appears my washer pump is white and at the top if the fluid bottle.

The earlier cars are - it is just the later ones where it is buried an inaccessible. I have brought washer pumps back from the dead by flashing the connections the wrong way round (giving it a kick backwards), and then back as it should be. It doesn't always work, but sometimes...

I would suggest the sensor that Rob has mentioned too. Here is a picture of it, sticking out in front of the mesh.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome [:)]

Took the pump out today and took apart and gave it a clean up with contact cleaner and a squirt of wd40. Powered it up from a spare battery and it worked a treat so that's saved buying a new one!
