Picked up my 944 Turbo ; Question time

Hi guys I collected my car from RetroRestorer yesterday after he had completed all the sill work and changed belts and clutch. Very happy with the car and all the work I asked to be done is perfect.

There are areas of the car which I have now found out aren't perfect so I'm going to give these a crack myself (engine and body work were certainly beyond my skill set).

In no particular order;

1. I have hot (very hot) air from my heater unit.

2. I can't close the sun roof (open because of 100+ miles of heater).

3. Sunroof button now disappeared in to console (vigorous pressing trying to close).

4. Lights; First click is side lights, second click is pop up main beam. In order to close pop ups you need to turn lights off (back 2 clicks) and they won't go down if you return to side lights only (1 click back)?

These are my immediate finds and I'm sure they'll be a lot more.

Happy bank holiday guys.

Ian

Welcome to the world of 944 niggly faults....

Clark's garage is going to be a valuable resource for you - google it and check out the workshop manual.

1. Could be the "clip" - see on here or Clark's garage.

4. That's how they work

2. Sunroof could be a number of things - I presume the arms aren't retracting? This could be fiddly

3. Should be easy enough to retrieve the switch - you may have damaged the locating tabs.

Wot Ed said [:)]

Here's a link to the Sunroof mechanism on Clarks.

You can manually wind it back down using a spark plug socket until you can fix it properly

As a new owner of a 944 Turbo myself I have experienced almost identical issues and found most to be an easy fix.
1. Heater blowing hot - the air distribution flap on the left of the heater assembly (my car being a LHD meant this was drivers side) has a clip that hold the operating rod. These break and the heater defaults to full heat (which is handy if you live in the Arctic - I live in Dubai!). When you remove the cover from the side of the heater assembly you will more than likely find the rod hanging down. Replace clip and nice cold air again.

2. I had problems with my sunroof until I realised that the switch works in different ways depending on where the ignition switch is. With the ignition on the switch will raise and lower the roof. With the switch in position one it retracts the arms so you can remove the roof. Remember that there is a micro switch in the middle of the sunroof, between the 2 front latches above your head. The metal triangular tongue which presses against this switch is sometimes loose (it was on my car) so just push upwards against the tongue whilst operating the switch with the ignition on and your roof should move. Hope this makes sense!

3. You will have to remove the panel to be able to reseat the switch. 2 screws under the ashtray and 2 under the tray below the radio (just pulls out).

4. Lights - thats how mine work so think this is correct.

Good luck!

Thanks guys.. Tomorrow is take things apart time.

Also I'm unsure of the ecu on mine but should the car feel like some crazy Group C entry? 1st gear is v short and in 2nd on I'm catapulted in to hyper space at 3000 rpm, there's no gentle feeding of boost in this car. It just arrives , quite scarily tbh.

I'm new to 944s, so might well have got this wrong, but I think you're incorrect in one detail of your description of headlight operation - I think that the pop-ups only supply low beam; high beam is supplied by the lights in the bumper. Can any one who knows for sure confirm or otherwise ?

The pop up lamps should do both. You can test this by switching the headlights on then back to sidelights (so the pods stay up) and flash the lights. You should see all four light up.

Link below has the part numbers for the clip and the retaining metal thingy.

I believe that it can be caused by the valve too. There is a vacuum line to the valve which is inside the engine bay against the bulkhead, and when the control pressure is lost the valve fails fully open. The valve itself can also fail: a catastrophic fail will see you car immobilised and an internal failure of the vacuum controller will leave the valve open.

A catastrophic failure of this valve will also lead to a half hour track closure and very impressive plume of steam as all your coolant dumps onto your exhaust pipe.

"Allegedly"

I believe so.

Luckily when the solenoid for the Apexi was installed last year, the valve was moved across slightly away from the clutch.

Ok gang..

Sunroof sorted and retreival of button successful.

Heating issue looks like I'm not in need of the quick plastic clip fix but my actually temperature button isn't moving the linkage. So do I. need a new unti?

Ok I un bolted the console from the dash and it turns out the middle plug wasn't attached! Plugged in and tested. Moves just fine.

What's up next I wonder?

On a 1984 944 the aux driving lamps in the bumper were switchable - the switch is on the centre console. This rather scuppers your theory...
