Pierburg Vacuum unit

Hi,
I need your kind help and advice.
My starter motor has given up. Well there was a smell of electrical burning and the car just stopped. The AA guy seems to agree dead starter. Reading some of the other threads on replacement I was getting some screeching on start up some times. So maybe was not long for this world anyway. I am now removing all the parts needed to get to the starter. Now while doing this I found that the Vacuum Unit on the back inlet crossover was broken and looks from the amount of dirt on it been detached for some time. It seemed to make no difference to the running and nothing was said with regards to performance etc at the last major service a few months ago. My question is what does it do? It seems to operate a flat in the back tube connecting both inlet plenums. As it seemed to run OK without it is there a real need to replace it? It's a worry not to replace as I am sure it is there for a reason. Would be interested in your views / experiences with this part.

Cheers Steve

I beleive the unit you are refering to is the control for the resonator flap. Flap closed at low rpm, open at high rpm. This is to aid good slow running characteristics with top end BHP. I don't know what the failure mode is but I would guess either you have poor slow running or reduced max output.

Geoff,

Many thanks for the info.
The actuator arm had become detached and the mounting on the pump broken. The flap seems to have been "open" all the time. It is not sticking so can only assume the plastic body just broke. Or there was some ham fisted servicing in the distant past.
Will be replacing the unit along with the starter motor.
Steve
