Pinion noise

My 944 gives out a bit of what I think is pinion noise from the diff. A slight whine on power or on the overrun, but dies out at contsant speed / light load. It sounds like diff bearings to me causing a noisy / poor CWP mesh. It's not too intrusive; you can only hear it with the roof open.

I mentioned it to a mechanic friend of mine (BMW specialist, not Porsche) but he suggested that the transaxles on 944s are all a bit noisy (there's a lot going on in one box) and they are generally very strong.

Opinions on my pinion?

Isn't pinion noise something that 968's commonly suffer from?

I do know that 944 gearboxes are often a little noisy, and 944's generally are regarded as being quite noisy in the cabin.

You changed the gearbox oil a couple of weeks back didn't you? Swepco to a high-quality synth ... I wonder if the change of oil has made it noisy, on either a short-term or long-term basis.

Oli.

Yes I did, Oli, and was encouraged by the fact that the Swepco that came out was very clear - no nasty bits floating around. It's hard to say now whether it's louder than it was before.

I need to drive another back-to-back to compare. I'll scour autotrader and go for a test drive. [:)]

Sir.

You are in Coventry ... find another member on here with a car in known good nick. If you drive one from Autotrader then you will be wasting a sellers' time, and may be driving a duffer! (Your comment may be a joke, in which case I apologise.)

Oli.

Yes, it was a joke. I wouldn't waste anybodies time - I had enough of that myself, recently. Having said that, there is one at a dealer just down the road - perhaps that wouldn't be so cheeky.[;)]

As for TADS - maybe I'm worrying over nothing.

Dealers are a bit more fair game, in my book. <Looks around to make sure that there are no dealers nearby to give me a ticking off for saying that!>

Generally, the answer to any question about 944 gearbox noise is that they are slightly noisy units, and not to worry about it.

Oli.

My gearbox sounds exactly like the in-car footage of a touring car. I kind of like it, and figure it will break when it breaks, and then I'll fix it.

Do, however, change the gearbox oil. It made a big difference to mine, in both noise and feel, for a while.

Thanks for your input, Paul. Yeah, a 'touring car noise' (i.e. straight-cut dog 'box) is what mine sounds like, but not too loud. I have changed the oil as detailed above.

I worry too much - I was convinced the propshaft bearing on my 325i was on the way out when I bought the car but nothing ever happened...[:)]

My Volvo 740 turbo needed discs and pads all round according to the pre-purchase inspection. 40k later it had 3 new mot's and was still stopping fine.

Maybe we need a thread for parts that have held on far beyond their expected lifespan?

you could buy a second hand rear mat and put it under your existing one to deaden the sound. I have a thick rubber backed mat from my 928 which I am going to put in the S2 . It sure worked in the 928[:D]

My 83 lux has a noise gearbox,it was doing it when i bought the car in 1995 and still doing it now and has'nt fell to bits yet so i wouldnt worry about it !!!
