Pipercross or not Pipercross?

Fox997

New member
I've been reading several reviews and advice ref fitting a replacement air filter and/or air induction kit to the 997, such as the Pipercross

Is there any proof that fitting a replacement panel filter or induction kit give any improvements that are noticeable?

Is it better to leave it alone and keep to a standard setup?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Just replacing air intake filtration is unlikely to bring you any significant improvement in performance, but there may well be implications in respect of increased induction noise and invalidation of any extended warranty.

There may be benefits when fitted in conjunction with other performance-enhancing modifications.

Both Alex L and Okellyt have experience of these and perhaps they'll be along to provide further details later.

Regards,

Clive.

It's so dull whenever I look at a thread about modifications on any Porsche forum the immediate response is that it will void your warranty. I know it's a real issue I just hate that so many people are tied into their car's being totally standard because of German anal retentiveness.

If you don't have a warranty then you only have to worry about if it is oiled or not. Oiled can mess with your MAF sensor. I have a BMC filter in mine and it's so far been fine.

This is always an amusingly controversial subject. I used to work in a company where we were involved in engine testing and I do remember some evidential work showing that paper filters provide the finest, albeit most restrictive and rapidly-blinded filtration.

I had an RS4 where I fitted an aftermarket oiled mesh filter for a while (no need to say whose as it's irrelevant) - inspection of the MAF under a microscope showed extremely fine dusting which did not occur with the manufacturer's paper one. So, (a) possibly very minimal oiling - although never sensed a problem, and (b) slightly less thorough filtration.

It was a bit more rorty though...!

I have just changed my 997 paper one - very dirty after 12k miles (cut it open to inspect the pleats).

Gen 1 C2S with x51 plus Euro Cup air intake (I helped design) and BMC filter + 23.5BHP and boy did it sound good......

It did have the miltek 200 cell low back pressure exhaust mind........combining the two upped torque and power and it sounded **ing marvellous

I changed mine for a BMC filter on my first 997 and moved it to two other Gen1s as I progressed (?) through the range. OPC I used wasn't bothered at all by the filter.

Induction sound was much sportier and well worth the low price to upgrade. If you are worried keep the original and stick it back in when you take car to the OPC.

Also fitted Fabspeed mufflers on the 1st one as no sports exhaust. OPC was fine but removed them for me and re-fitted originals when I traded up.

They always sorted minor issues out under warranty no problem but I guess if the engine blew.....[:(]
