Pirelli, Continental and Bridgestone alternatives

From what I have read on the various posts throughout the 996 forum, tyre brand choice seems to be around Pirelli, Continental and Bridgestone.

I would like to pose the question what about these alternatove brands, bearing in mind that I have no intention of running my 996 C2 on track days nor likely to "max" it on the Autobahns or at the "ring".

Contenders are:
Dunlop SP Sportmaxx 97Y
Goodyear F1 97Y
Michelin Pilot Sport 2 or Pilot Sport 3 97Y

or what about
Toyo or Yokohama?

Thoughts gents (and ladies)

I use Yokohama Advan Sport V103's on mine, and am very pleased with them. They aren't a cheap alternative, but so far the rears have lasted twice as long as Contis did, and are still only half worn.

Check with your insurance company before you take the plunge. Mine (Aviva) were quite happy about me fitting any brand, provided it was the same size and speed rating as the manufacturer specifies. Others can be more picky and insist on N rated (I am told).

i've used the Goodyear F1s and they were a bit hard, very slippery as they got close to being worn out.
Yokohama 008Ps were fantastic, softest, grippiest tyre i've ever used; unfortunately at c4000 rear and 6000 front
miles the replacement regime became too frequent and expensive.

Do not even consider Toyo R888s (if those were the Toyos you meant)
I've used them and found them to be extremely noisy, very hard, don't last long, death trap in standing water.
On the track they are excellent.

Total 911 did an article and said that the Sumo's were the best tyre you could put on a 911 but I cant find anywhere to buy them in the UK.

I use Bridgestone S02's and have been very pleased with them - good mileage (17,000+) and also v good in the wet. I think you'll find the C2 will always be heavier on rear tyre usage than a C4/ Turbo though. I was wondering why you didn't consider Bridgestone as a contender?

Hi

Just replaced worn out Pirellis (all round) for Pirelli PZeros - good price, fairly quiet and do offer good rim protection for when my wife attempts parallel parking.. The last ones lasted approx 15k.

Regards

Thank you for the reposnes, very interesting.

Please note I am not against any manufacture, I am just interested in looking beyond teh established. Tyre choice seems very emotive.

Taking on board you get what you pay for... it is interesting that you can get a set of 18 inch Yokohama Advan Sport V103's for about £580 fitted at one end Michelin Pilot Sport 2 for £775. That is a hugh differnence.

Some will respond with issues on insurnace requirements, N rating, what best for certain types (C2 etc), how heavy your right foot is and what is a premium tyre manufacture, not withstanding that and assumin you meet any requirements, some £200 difference a set makes interesting reading to any bank manager (at home!).

I don't need tyres today but I thank you all for your views about what will be a question asked again and again...."what tyres should I get?"

Maybe you should ask yourself what you want and need from a tyre? If trotting back and forth to work is what you do then "anything" goes, but if you need performance you'll appreciate the collaboration between Michelin and Porsche and the 200£ will not seem like much.

Just a thought. [;)]

I'm surprised you didn't list Michelin that that first list...

Now on my second set of Michelin Pilot Sports. Have found them to have excellent grip and low noise. I got 16,000 miles from the rears and 24,000 from the fronts.
