Pirelli v Michelin

I currently have a set of Pirelli P-Zero's on 18" that were relatively fresh prior to a hard track day a couple of months ago but and now properly scrubbed [:)]

OPC said they had had it but now seem to have work over more evenly.

I have also purchased a set of Michelin Pilot Sport of the same front & rear dimensions.

I am thinking of keeping one set for the road and the other for track.

Having never really been into tyres previously, the question are:
  • which set are better for road or track?
  • are there any noticeable differences in the handling, feel, sound, wear etc.?
  • any other general comments or comparision between the two sets
Many thanks in advance.

Come on, someone must have used both Pirelli's and Michelins on the road OR track at some point.

Any opinions and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

I had PS2 on the car as per delivery, worst things I ever drove on due to screeching of tyres on the road surface-- and not even with spirited driving.
Changed to P-zeros and the problem was gone.

I have just changed the rears once again after my first and only trackday...
PS2 wore alot less, especially on the front, at 12K the fronts were hardly worn and the rears gone.
P-zeros the fronts are wearing on the edge (but may be another issue ) and the rears are gone at 10K
I found the road noise in general to be less on the P-zeros, but not as quiet as the Conti's I ran on my last car.
I've read others raving about the PS2 but they didn't suit me or my car.. it was the first time I'd ever had reason to swap a complete set of tyres and for me was a good move.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the input, very interesting and informative.

Basically, the Michelin screach but wear better and the Pirelli's wear poorly by comparison.

On that basis, it may be best to use the Michelins on the track where screaching is not an issue...

Is there a noticeable difference in handling?

Apart from the screeching sounds, not really that much difference in grip to me.. just that the screeching affects how much grip you think you have. After my track day the passenger asked if that was as much grip as there was on offer... I replied that there was plenty more but the sound didn't exactly inspire the driver.
With road use I have never had the P-zeros making unhappy sounds, however a 30mph bend had the PS2 screeching away like I had stolen it [;)]

Others swear the PS2 are better, but this is just my experience

i had pirelli p zero's and brought a new set of michelins from Bracknell Tyres - £650 F&R :) - Bargain. The michelin feel a lot tighter around corners and the car turns in much better. I prefer the Michelins to the Pirelli''s on handling & wear.
