Piston Slap

reevers

New member
I have a knocking/ticking noise coming from the rear drivers side of the engine. Tappits were replaced but noise is still there. Been told probably Piston Slap and will need either new engine or engine rebuilt. My car is a 2005 997 C2 Tip, with 138k miles. Has anyone had similar problems and probable cost to either rebuild or replace engine.

Any advice appreciated

Bad news. Speak to Baz Hart at Hartech. They are the experts. Expect a £10k bill. But, Hartech is the name to recoup much of the cost when you sell.

Take it to a Porsche specialist and have it bore scoped to confirm. Northways(nr Reading) generally quote £6500-7000+ vat as valve guides are reguarily needing adding to the list nowadays.

Hope it's not as serious as that [:(]

Is Piston Slap common with the 997.1s? I've never come across any threads on it before.

Cylinder 4,5 and 6 are on the drivers side, right?

Good luck with it Reevers! Hope it works out OK!

If you search for bore scoring rather piston slap, then you'll see more people reporting the problem. Arguably different words for the same problem.

Assuming this is the problem and you get it rebuilt, you will have the choice of all (1-6) or some (4,6) - I really think the 'all' option is the best answer if you plan on keeping the car. It adds another £2k or so, but money well spent.

We find that 4,6 are most common to fail (drivers side) and 3, 5 are less common.

Ok, so related to bore scoring. Thanks Lee! Best write up on that is Hartech's 70odd page technical document describing the whole thing and explains really well why 5&6 cylinders fail.
I researched the life out of it last year before my purchase.
