Plastic rear screen cleaner

New member
I was rummaging in my garage recently when I came across a bottle of the polish I used to clean the rear screen of my MGF. It was manufactured by a Midlands company but only available in large drums, so the MG Car Club decanted it into small 100ml bottles and sold it on to members for a fiver.

I tried it on my Boxster rear screen yesterday and it worked a treat. If there is sufficient interest (post a message here) I will contact the company to see if we can do something similar. The price may have increased a bit after four years, but it should still be a lot cheaper than most of the other offerings discussed in an earlier thread.

I've used the Renovo plastic window polish, and its very good. For more info follow link RENOVO
The ultra proofer is good also. I was a bit of a wimp when it came to the roof dye, but found that the colour was restored quite well with just the proofer.

my hood is going to need re sealing next year what should i use for that? and how easy is it to get a good coverage without damaging any paintwork??

re sealing

Do you mean re-proofing Helen?

If so I used the Porsche product.

You need to wash the roof first and let it dry. use a softish brush to get all the dirt out from the weave. I bought the Porsche roof cleaner, only to find it is the same stuff they flog for washing the car as well - you dilute it differently. I think therefore I have enough to do me annually for about 10 years of roofs...

Rinse thouroughly.

Once dry, proceed to the proofing:
To help protect the paintwork, I got a decorators polythene cover (99p from B&Q or screwfix) and opened the roof a bit. Cut a slit in the polythene and fed it over the roof, trapping it under the "horseshoe" and betwween the roof and windscreen/side windows, this then covered most of the car. The remaining areas down to the ground I taped newspapers to the polythene. Voila! Exposed roof and no paintwork showing. (I did mask the rear window and Plastic bits on the side of the roof as well).

I wore a mask, to spray liberally. I found a can did the roof once.

I guess the same process goes for most products - but if there is a brush on product then that may be easier to apply.

The proofing is not as good as the factory fresh one, but that was ruined by AFN Reading when they gave the car it's "Curtousy wash" when I took it in to get it's UK registration done. So for 10 days from new I had a nice beading up roof...[] I told them I had washed it that morning when I took it in as well[8|]

Help!..
I am sure when it rained, the water used to go into droplets (like on Wax) but noticed the other day when I left it out in the rain(which doesnt happen much) the whole of the roof looked sodden through.
Recently had a main dealer wash and valet as part of the 2nd year maintenance...
Is this normal, or should I get them to re proof it..?.

Thanks

That would do it...

You are not supposed to use detergent on the soft top roof, but the dealers don't care.
I only realised they had ruined my roof next time it rained - and I'm too far away for it to be convenient to go back and complain[&:]

The actual roof is still waterproof - a neoprene layer makes sure of that, but the cosmetic beading of the water is ruined if you wash it.

Not quite the plastic screen thread but will carry on regardless.
Ive been in touch with a couple of companys and wait for restocking on the PLEXUS POLISH, have seen and read good reports, was designed for aero applications.

Waterproof toppings..........

Ive used the autoglym soft top cleaner and conditioner (2 seperate bottles), its easy to use and it beads too..........
I was told by an assistant [] in Halfords that customers said that the turtlewax cleaner and conditioner (2 seperate bottles) was the best one available, I bought it and it didnt seem to do anything so paid another £20 for the autoglym.
If it doesnt bead then how do i know its working ???

John, you need some of the above, or i've seen another thread using a scotch gaurd product from B&Q. I've used the ultra proofer, and it has enhanced the appearence of the hood, but the water still does not bead completely.

Thanks all and sorry for Hijacking this thread![:D]
I have a good mind to take it back to the dealer and ask them to re proof it!...They still owe me fixing clips for the rear spoiler that they did not refit properly after the RMS change.. I did the refit myself in the end..
