Play in driveshaft?

When I take a right hand full lock turn I have an intermittent knock(not loud).I have looked underneath and I can twist the R/H shaft slightly, however when I try to twist the L/H shaft I have no movement at all.
Is this normal or possibly the cause of my noise?

First thing to do is probably to check that the bolts holding the driveshaft to the gearbox flange are tight.

Knock (singular) or rattling/tapping noise (repeating), possibly increasing in frequency as you go quicker?

Many things can cause similar noises, and I have wasted more hours than I want to remember chasing what I thought were duff CV joints, which turned out to be loose brake pads. (Yes, it's not good. What's worse is that I have done it twice - D'oh!)

Any more symptoms with which to diagnose this malaise?

Ive replaced all driveshaft bolts with brand new ones.
The noise is a kind of deep doink doink noise that does change in frequency when I go faster on full lock

Loose brake pads (retaining crucifix springs can get slightly out of shape)? Something catching? Brake disk backing plate mangled? Knackered diff? Captive elephant having an early Christmas party?

P.S. One or more of those may not be a serious suggestion. "Doink" doesn't sound like a CV-ish noise, but I could be wrong.

Doesn't sound like the CV joints to me. Worn CV joint noise when on full lock is associated with front wheel drive cars when the joint is angled due to the steering angle of the front wheel. In a rear wheel drive car the CV join will attenuate more or less the same angle whether driving in a straight line or under full lock (at low speeds) so should make a similar noise level in both cases.

Mark,

You are quite right, but the outer joint(s) will rotate more quickly than the inner ones, therefore you can diagnose it like this. But you need to be a bit more attentive than with a FWD car.

(Note - "Outer" in this sense refers to the two joints on the axle associated with the wheel on the 'outside' of the turn, so the right-hand wheel on full left-hand lock, and vice-versa. NOT the usual designation of outside=those nearer the wheel.)

ETA: Completely agree in that this doesn't sound like a CV issue.
