Play in gear stick.

Hello. Hope somoene may shed some light.
Some time ago I tried the Type 911 short shift selector on my '86 Lux. I primarily wanted to take the play out of the gear stick - there was at least a good inch or so of play at the top of the stick when in gear. This worked well for a time, although there was still a degree of play there. However, after several thousand miles the thing seemed to pack up - large amounts of play returned, second gear became extremely difficult to find, 4th being what I usually ended up with. I had the selector removed and replaced with a new standard Porsche part. Again much of the play disappeared - probably still 1/2 an inch at the top of the stick though. A quick look at the short shifter didn't reveal any obvious faults though. This new part has worked for probably 15,000 miles but there is now over an inch of play again. My local garage has had a look underneath and recon that the rose joints on the selector are bu993red and have a lot of play in them. I have had a look at the stick and retaining pin and there is only a minute degreee of play at that point, accounting for only about 5mm or so play at the top of the stick. The play is all from this point backwards. A reconditioned stick and pin from John Mitchell actually had more play at the pin.

My question is - what's causing me to go through selectors? ... and has anyone had this problem before?
One suggestion from John is that the connecting bar may have been damaged/bent if someone has not disconnected things properly when dropping the box to change the clutch.

Thanks.

(I have searched past threads and don't seem to have the answer.)

When you tried our front lever.. did you transfer the concave washer from your old unit across... if you do not use the concave washer, you will have more play than any stick with a washer in place, as the washer is designed to centralise the linkage rod onto the pin.

Our pins are machined to Porsche dimensions but to a narrower tolerance than Porsche manufacturing made the originals to.. So in theory, apart from the above, I can not imagine any reason why you should have more play with our lever, than with a genuine one.

The other thing that stikes me is that the genuine Porsche rear assembly has no rose joints or anything like rose joints in it....

The type911 rear assembly comes with a crossbrace bar with two cheap rosejoints.. the genuine porsche crossbrace just has two rubber bushes..

The genuine rear assembly, unless you ask for it, does not come with the crossbrace...

So if your garage is sure that you currently have worn rose joints on the rear assembly.. then you still have part of the type911 kit fitted... In which case the original type911 kit probably wore out its main rose joint.. then you changed it but left in the crossbrace, which because its also made of low quality parts, has now worn out its rosejoints as well.

John S - What shifter have you got in Beaky?

It feels a world tighter than the one in our S2 (which is quite a recent standard one)
