Play in inner CV / driveshaft - how much is too much?

I've been checking this over this morning - I think I have a rear wheel bearing that is starting to grumble a bit, & one of the os inner CV boot ties is not tight enough, so has been leaking a bit of grease.

We noticed a bit of vibration under load on the last trackday, particularly at 120mph+. So is it the wheel bearing or the CV's?

But there is a fair bit of play in the n/s inner CV - certainly more than on the o/s. I guess that needs changing. And if the o/s boot needs doing (and the joint cleaning & re-greasing), I should probably do that as well...

- and then if I'm doing one or two CV's, do I do them all? presumably the Q-Drive CV's and driveshafts (complete one for £99) are a waste of time?

 
I would take the driveshafts off and replace all 4 on the bench. I got my CV joints from Design911 and they have a black Friday discount at the moment so I think you will get another 10% off.
 
Thanks - I'm sure you're right & all new joints saves me all the messy cleaning job (I an save that for later & clean / inspect the old joints if I can be bothered..)
Frazer part are also doing the same deal on CV's + free delivery.
I wonder how long it is since the bolts on the outer CV's were shifted? I think a few applications of penetrating oil are in order

 
Mine came out easily after 126,000 miles. Just take care to furtle all of the crud out of the bolt heads before attempting to get the 12pt bit onto them otherwise it will bottom out on the crud and you won't get full engagement of the tool (ooh 'er).

Packing the new joints with grease is the messiest job in the world. Prepare to find grease in your hair, up your nose, on the ceiling etc etc.
 
+1 on what m3 says cleaning out the bolt heads. Stripping them would not be fun.
You need a good quality long 12 point bit, a short one won't clear the CV boot.

apologies for the delay in replying. IMHO, rear wheel bearings tend to rumble gently over a period of time, and start when under load. 944 wheel bearings generally last a lonnnnnng time....

Good shout with the CV joints and yes, I've only used Frazer part once but very impressed with the service and help offered on the phone,

Chris - you've been slacking!
The wheel bearing is when that side is loaded under cornering or at v high speed. I don't know if it's contributing to the vibration.
I'll find out at donington on the 28th (are you coming?)

 
All four CV's replaced - yes it is a mucky job... All bolts came free without any hassle.
There's no play in the joints now, so that's good. Road tested up to 100 ish and no vibrations..

When I have the time I'll clean and inspect the old joints - the outers seemed to be OK on the car so could be returned to stock.


 
I did warm it up first, so I worked up to it.. [:D] Previously the vibration was only really felt at 100+ or under heavy acceleration, not easy this weekend as it was so wet.

It's back in the garage now, the next test will be at Donington [;)]
