play in steering wheel

I can feel a bit of vertical movement in my steering wheel, probably caused because to get out of the car I find I'm having to pull myself up on the wheel and out (it can't be due to old age, not yet anyway!)

there is a piece in this months club magazine about fitting a new steering column ring/bush on a 911, but they don't say what problem they are trying to solve....

any ideas?
 
When I first bought my car and was reading up on issues there was something about steering bushes/bearings. I think it is for the reason you say. Mine has a small amount of play in it but it is not noticeable unless you really pull on the wheel. I tend not to pull on the wheel when I get in and out anyway, though I do need to slide the seat back to prevent my bottom wearing out the bolster.
