Please convince me

Hi

Just over here fron the 3.2 register because I'm considering a tiptronic. I can't afford a 993 so I'm stuck with a 964 and I say stuck because I've heard such bad things about them. When I bought my 3.2 I did consider one then but couldn't really find anyone to recommend them - even a 911 & Porsche World buying guide could find little reason for choosing one over a 3.2.

I assume, however, that you chaps have good experiences and can help alleviate the fears of those notorious problems with flywheels & oil leaks etc so I thought I'd post this item to give the 964 register a chance to convince us doubters.

Thanks.

Nought wrong with them -what you have heard is a generalized load of b*ll*cks. Sure, some leak, some have probs., like any eleven to fifteen year old car.

Hey, they got power steering, good aircon and heating system that works, 250bhp min. at the flywheel.

Just take your time and find a good one.

If I was to tell you anything useful , it would be that the 996 Tip S (a 5 speeder) is a much better propositon as tips go than a 964 or 993 tip , besides being a perfectly useable daily driver and having all the creature comforts that may be lacking in the 3.2...and could even be cheaper than a late 993 tip. However you may be talking 30k+ ...rather than 20k- for the 964tip []
If 996s are not for you , you have a difficult choice seeing as you left the 964 at the altar the first time round and ran off with a 3.2 [:D]
In support of the 964, its better value than a 993, however 911s will always be expensive , if you can afford it just get the one you want otherwise you will rationalise it all into buying a ford Focus or something......

I didn't really want to turn this into a "3.2s are better than 964s" post, but if you think all 911s are expensive you've not had a 3.2 - cheap as chips I reckon.

Can't add to what Melv has already said.
These cars are eleven - fifteen years old. So you are buying an old car, at this age most cars are on the scrap heap. But not the GOOD 964, so buy a good one. However it would be foolish not to expect repair bills.
If you are on a limited buget, buy the best new, other make car that takes your fancy. complete with warrantee, free years insurance, and no MOT requirement.

By the way my 964 is a 1991 and doesn't even think about leaking oil.

I too second/third what the others have said - the 964 has got a massivley overstated reputation for being the bad apple in Porsche's stable. As long as you buy a good one you should be ok & it should not cost much more than a 3.2 to run. Also, if you're looking for a tip, then it does not have the double mass flywheel that the manual cars have, so you only need to worry about leaks. My '91 has no leaks at all. Not bad for a 13 year old car! It would be interesting to know just how many 3.2's do actually leak oil!

Go for it, you won't regret the move!

Ken, the way you keep your car -it wouldn't dare!!

I used to budget £2K p.a. for my '89 964 C4 three years ago.

I know Debs (the new owner) has had a lot of work done on it since, but hasn't touched the engine. Must be on 120,000miles

I would go along with the others and say that the 964 is a great car, having owned a C4 it was brilliant. The 996 was the most unreliable 911 I have ever owned and have recently parted with it.. very bad experience and never again after paying so much money; wish I had kept the 993 Targa....... looking to go back there or a 964

My 91 C4 targa leaks a bit, the aircon is still occassionally ropey and the roof wasn't brilliant but any good relationship is worth working at.

I knew it had some problems and the price I paid reflected that - it was completely untouched if not a little unloved when I bought it. I wanted a car I could sort out and know what had been done and to what standard.

The engine will get sorted next year. I love it to bits and I'm very happy.

Iain,
If you are still looking for a good 964. Here's a good one here.
Mark Roberts is the 964 Social Secretary (North) you will find his number in Contacts, Porsche Post.;

Ken,

My dad has decided to sell his 964.

If you know anyone who is looking for one, the details are as follows:

1993 K, Coupé Tiptronic
~64k miles
Midnight Blue metallic, Light grey leather interior (sports seats) Completely original spec FSH - (Hartech lifetime maintenance plan) V.Recent top end engine rebuild (Hartech) New Continental Tyres all round on unmarked original 16" cup wheels (with coloured centres) CD Player Porsche (original equip. car cover) (Everything works)

The car was bought from Hartech by my dad a few years ago, and has a very good history.

I think that a starting price of £23k would be fair given the year/mileage/colour/originality/mechanical condition.
However, offers are welcome.

Indeed, perhaps if you could circulate on Titanic, that would be a big help?

Contact Mark on 01900 823859 after (4:30pm)...dealing with this on dad's behalf.

I intend to place ad's in Porsche Post, 911 & Porsche World etc.

Hopefully it can find a good home.

Mark
