Please Could Somebody Do Me A Favour

... and have a look/feel under their rear bumper.

When my car was in for a service last November, Craig at GT One said that the bumper re-inforcement strip was missing. This is a metal strip which fixes to the lower front edge of the rear bumper by 2 screws and 3 pop rivets. Mine has the screw holes (with screws attaching the inner bumper brackets) but no holes for pop rivets.

I have bought the re-inforcement strip from OPC Tonbridge (£6.?? + VAT) so it's not the end of the world if I don't need it.

Can anybody tell me if theirs has this or not.

TIA

Although I profess little personal knowledge of the more arcane aspects of the marque, Mel, Des and others who have seen my car have advised me that it is reasonably original.

With that proviso I can advise, having just been out to look:
  • my car has the metal strip on the leading edge of the rear bumper you mention,
  • the metal strip is held on by approx 5 rivets and 2 screws
Let me know if you need more detail, photos etc and I would be happy to oblige.

Nick

Thanks Nick, that's really helpful. I'll fit mine on Sunday. I just didn't want to drill holes in the bumper, only to find that the RS shouldn't have one.

Indeed Nick your car could be become a template it's so original .... how Tomas Schmitz let that one thru his hands is a mystery.....[;)]

Might not be unrelated to the wheelbarrow load of large denomination euro notes that were required for the transaction!

Those boys at GT-One certainly give our cars a good check over don't they?

If you posted this on Pistonheads someone would have told you about their mate's aunty's nephew who once owned a red Porsche which crashed rear first into the armco at the 'Ring before landing on its roof and this must be your car if it's got the metal strip missing. Imagine what else was botched when the car was completely rebuilt - they'll also have photos but they've mislaid them somewhere on their system.
[;)][]

Back to your question, my car has the strip too. It's pop riveted in five places, and has two countersink cross-headed screws and 'raised countersink washers' if that makes sense. Like this but black...

LOL Rich -that is SO true....

Rich,

They're actually called 'screw cups'.

Sorry to be so pedantic but just in case someone was browsing through the Screwfix catalogue for them.[:)]

Cheers,

i have an RS rear bumper centre section leaning up against the wall in my spare room, with this strip on it.. i can take a picture if you want

Thanks for the offer but the strip is now fitted. My memory must be going because it did have the holes for the pop rivets. It was a fiddly job getting the strip on whilst lying on my back in the garage and aligning all of the holes but all in, less than an hours work.

Stewart

Glad you got it fitted.

Next question. What's it for exactly? Thought I might take mine off to save weight!

Nick

i think mine is missing on my current bumper, and its got a bit of "nappy sag" around the middle of the centre section.. its about 10mmx10mm aluminium channel section, so weighs next to nothing; if you're looking for weight benefits you would probably be better off shaving your head or taking a good c**p before going for a drive [;)]

The sagging in the middle was what made it fiddly to fit. Without the strip, the flexing could cause the edge of the bumper to split.
